Portland Sea Dogs News Release

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats squeaked past the Portland Sea Dogs 11-8 with a three run walk-off home run by Luke Hughes Thursday at New Britain Stadium. This was the third time in the last four games the Sea Dogs have suffered a loss in the final at bat of the game.

Thursday's game was Mike James's (0-2) second blown save of the year after going a perfect 25 for 25 in 2006 in save opportunities with Single-A Wilmington. James allowed three hits and four earned runs in a third of an inning pitched. Brian Forystek (1-1) walked away with the win for the Rock Cats.

The Sea Dogs jumped ahead early scoring two runs in the first inning. Andrew Dobies got the start for Portland, going 5.2 innings, striking out nine batters, but gave up a Gil Velazquez grand slam making the score 5-2 in the fourth. The Sea Dogs answered back with Andrew Pickney, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jeff Natale all doubling, tying the game at five in the fifth.

Cory Keylor hit a two run sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, giving the Sea Dogs an 8-7 lead, but New Britain fought back with Trevor Plouffe scoring off a Matt Allegra single to left field evening the score at eight. Hughes finished the game with a three run walk-off home run. With two on and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Hughes ended the game with his first career Double-A home run.
