Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Sergio Santos hit a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth and Chip Cannon launched a solo shot in the 13th, helping the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 5-4, extra-inning win over the Binghamton Mets at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium Thursday. New Hampshire swept the four-game series, handing the B-Mets their seventh straight loss.
The game began as a pitchers' duel between Binghamton's Marcos Carvajal and New Hampshire's Kyle Yates, both of whom departed after five shutout innings, with Carvajal allowing only one hit.
Binghamton (3-11) broke the scoreless tie in the seventh when Jose Coronado singled, moved to second on a two-out walk drawn by Mark Kiger, and scored on Miguel Negron's base hit to right. New Hampshire (11-5) rallied to tie in the bottom of the frame, as Santos doubled and scored on Ryan Klosterman's single.
The B-Mets re-took the lead in the eighth. Nic Jackson started the rally by drawing a two-out walk before Coronado reached on catcher's interference. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Corey Ragsdale drove them in with a double down the leftfield line. Fernando Martinez followed with a base hit to right that brought in Ragsdale for a 4-1 B-Mets lead.
Robinzon Diaz led off New Hampshire's half of the ninth with a base hit to center against reliever Brandon Nall before Cannon doubled him home. Closer Carlos Muñiz then came on to face Santos, giving up the two-run homer.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 13th. After Ryan Cullen (0-1) recorded the inning's first out, Cannon hit his walk-off homer to right-center.
New Hampshire's Lee Gronkiewicz (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
Friday, the B-Mets return home for a three-game series against the Altoona Curve. Michael Devaney (0-1, 5.63) gets the start for the B-Mets against lefthander Josh Shortslef (0-3, 4.80) of Altoona. Game time is 7:05 from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
Notes: Binghamton finished 1-7 on their eight-game road trip to Trenton and New Hampshire...Coronado had a bunt single in the fifth to end an 0 for 22 skid...Carvajal entered today's game with a 15.43 ERA while Yates's ERA was 8.64...the blown save was Muñiz's first in three chances...three New Hampshire relievers teamed up to retire 14 in a row at one point between Martinez's RBI single in the eighth and Jackson's one-out hit in the 13th.
