Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH S.C. - After taking game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday night the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped the back-end, 6-2, to the Lynchburg Hillcats. The game was tied until the top of the 7th and final inning which is when the Cats plated four late runs to put away the Birds.

Lynchburg wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, plating a run in the top of the 1st inning when 1B Steven Pearce, a former USC Gamecock, doubled into the corner in left, scoring LF Pedro Powell, who reached with a walk. The run-scoring double from Pearce gave the Cats a 1-0 edge.

Myrtle Beach fought back and tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the 3rd. SS Jaime Trejo led the inning off with a double into left-centerfield and later came around to score on an opposite field, RBI single delivered by CF Matt Young.

The Pelicans took the lead a couple of innings later, in the bottom of the 4th, when 1B Greg Creek blasted a line drive into right-centerfield. Creek legged out a triple, but as he was sliding into third the relay throw bounced into the Lynchburg dugout, allowing Creek to score. The triple and error gave Myrtle Beach a 2-1 lead.

The Hillcats came back to even the score at 2-2 in the top of the 5th inning when SS Brian Bixler struck again. One night after launching two home runs against the Pelicans, Bixler touched off another longball, a solo shot over the left field wall. The 5th homer of the year, and third of the series from Bixler tied things up at two runs apiece.

In the top of the 7th the Hillcats exploded for four runs, scoring runs on an RBI single from CF Nyjer Morgan, another RBI base hit courtesy of Pearce and a two-run double off the lumber of DH Neil Walker, which stretched the lead to 6-2. The Pelicans went quietly in the bottom of the 7th as the Hillcats held on to take game two.

Myrtle Beach starter Charlie Morton logged five innings and gave up a pair of runs on three hits, while walking five and striking out five. Reliever Moises Hernandez (L, 0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs in the 7th on three hits. Lynchburg starter Dustin Craig (W, 2-1) took home the win thanks to a strong six inning spot start. He struck out eight and walked three while giving up just two runs over three hits in the victory.

On Wednesday night the Pelicans and Hillcats square off in the series finale. The first pitch will be tossed at 7:02 pm, while the gates will open at 6:02 pm.
