
Blue Rocks rally falls short

Wilmington, DE --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (27-32) rally in the ninth came up short in a 9-5 loss to the Kinston Indians (40-18), CL affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Blue Rocks starter Tommy Hottovy was touched for seven runs in the first two innings as Kinston held on for the win.
Wilmington trailed 9-1 heading into the ninth inning and mounted a rally scoring four runs. Andrew Pinckney led off the inning with a single. With one out in the frame Bryan Pritz singled and Iggy Suarez walked to load the bases up. Chuck Jeroloman then followed up with grand slam to left to cut the lead to 9-5. It was Jeroloman's first homer of the year.
The Indians began the game connecting for three consecutive singles and a 1-0 lead. Trevor Crowe connected for an RBI single with runners on first and second to push the first run across. With one out Jordan Brown singled to load the bases and Wyatt Toregas followed up with a two-run double for a 3-0 lead. Stephen Head capped off the scoring in the inning when he came up next and connected for a three-run homer to right, his sixth of the year.
Kinston started the second inning with back-to-back singles and increased their lead to 7-0. After Argenis Reyes singled to lead off the frame Brandon Pinckney connected for an RBI single scoring Reyes.
Hottovy settled down over the third and fourth innings allowing just one hit and retiring five of six batters. With two outs in the fifth inning Hottovy plunked Head in the back to load the bases up, the second time this year Hottovy hit a batter. Hottovy then threw a wild pitch allowing Brian Barton to score from third and give Kinston an 8-0 lead.
Hottovy (4-5) took the loss working five innings and allowing eight runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out two.
Kinston increased their lead to 9-1 in eighth plating one unearned run off reliever Randy Newsom. Newsom worked three innings and allowed just two hits and struck out one but was the victim of three Blue Rocks fielding errors in the eighth inning.
The Blue Rocks were no-hit through the first 3.2 innings before Scott White singled off K-Tribe starter Scott Lewis.
The Blue Rocks broke up the shutout bid in the fifth when Jeroloman connected for a two out RBI single off Kinston reliever Chris Niesel scoring Pritz from third.
Niesel (3-0) recorded the win working two innings of relief allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out one.
Starter Scott Lewis, on a strict pitch count, took the no decision working four innings and allowing just one hit and no runs. Lewis also walked one and struck out four.
The Blue Rocks wrap up their home stand and series on Wednesday night with Kinston. The Blue Rocks will send right-hander Matt Goodson (0-2, 4.32) to the mound. Kinston will counter with right-hander Jensen Lewis 6-3, 4.19). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
