Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, Va. -- It's been an interesting last few days for Potomac with weird plays and struggles but the team came together tonight to snap a six-game losing streak and for good measure, take the second game of the doubleheader, downing Winston-Salem 8-1 and 4-3.
The Nationals rattled off eight runs in the second inning of the first game, highlighted by home runs by Rog Bernadina (5) and Tony Blanco (4) with a three-run double by Luke Montz. Robert Rodriguez drove in a run as well with a sacrifice fly.
Clint Everts earned his second win of the season by throwing six strong innings, striking out five and not allowing a run.
In the night-cap, the Nationals had to play catch-up after Winston-Salem scored twice to start the game. After the first inning, the Nationals controlled the game by outscoring the Warthogs 4-1.
Ian Desmond led the offense with a pair of RBI in the third to tie the game. Devin Ivany had an RBI single in the fourth and Marcos Yepez's grounding into a double play scored what would turn out to be the winning run.
Birthday boy Collin Balester, who turned 20 today, allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings of work to get his second win of the season.
Juan Ovalles struck out five in two innings of work to earn his first save of the season. Four of those strikeouts came in the sixth as he struck David Cook out looking and Cole Armstrong swinging. After a single by Rod Allen, Jr., Jose de los Santos swung at a wild pitch and reached first as the ball laid to rest at the backstop. Ovalles then struck out Cory Haggerty looking to end the inning.
The Nationals now get to have a little Major League fun as John Patterson is scheduled to get the start on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Warthogs. Patterson is coming back from a forearm strain and will be making his first rehab assignment since going on the disabled list earlier this season.
All active and retired military with ID can purchase Grandstand and Reserved tickets for half off.
