Cats Fall in Extras to Grizz

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In the series opener on Monday night at Raley Field, the Sacramento River Cats (48-36) fell to the Fresno Grizzlies (42-43) by a score of 4-3 in extras thanks to a solo home run off the bat of Chris Dominguez in the top of the 11th inning.
In the top of the first inning with two outs and no one on base, San Francisco Giants rehabber Brandon Belt hit a towering solo home run over the right-field fence to put the Grizzlies up 1-0. The first baseman added an RBI-single in the third inning, scoring catcher Guillermo Quiroz from third base. He then drove in another run in the top of the fifth on a softly hit line-drive single to center field, plating center fielder Darren Ford from second base to give Fresno a 3-0 cushion.
Belt finished the game 3-for-3 with a walk, a home run, and three RBI in his third rehab appearance with Fresno.
The River Cats were held hitless over the first 5.1 innings, but ended the no-hit bid in sixth inning on a bunt-single by center fielder Nick Buss. On the play, Grizzlies right-handed reliever Brett Bochy twisted his left ankle attempting to make a diving stop to try and keep the no-hitter alive. Bochy tossed 1.1 scoreless innings while allowing one hit and was replaced due to injury by fellow righty Adam Reifer.
Later in the sixth, left fielder Shane Peterson delivered the second hit of the game for Sacramento, a double to left field that scored Buss from first to put the River Cats on the board. Sacramento pulled within one run in the bottom of the seventh when designated hitter Anthony Aliotti belted a solo home run to right field, bringing the score to 3-2.
The River Cats took advantage of a costly Grizzlies error in bottom of the eighth inning when Fresno left fielder Adalberto Santos dropped a routine fly ball hit by shortstop Andy Parrino. The error allowed Cats catcher Luis Exposito, who had earlier reached on a single, to move to third base and eventually score on a Peterson sac-fly, tying the game at three.
In the top of the 11th inning, Grizzlies third baseman Chris Dominguez delivered a game-deciding home run off of River Cats reliever Paul Smyth, giving Fresno the lead and the eventual 4-3 victory. Smyth (3-2, 3.03 ERA) took the loss, his second of the year, after giving up one run and two hits in one inning of work. The home run was Dominguez' lone hit in five at-bats for Fresno.
Fresno right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree (1-1, 3.58 ERA) finished off a scoreless 11th frame to earn his first win of the season. Grizzlies lefty starter Jose De Paula (1-3, 4.86 ERA) dealt four hitless innings with two walks and three strikeouts before being removed, taking a no-decision.
Sacramento right-hander Dan Straily (4-3, 4.71 ERA) hurled 6.2 strong innings permitting only three runs on seven hits and three walks to go with six strikeouts in a no-decision.
Philip Humber pitched 1.1 scoreless innings issuing two walks and striking out one and Jeremy McBryde tossed two perfect innings striking out three in the process.
Peterson ended up 1-for-4 with two RBI on the night and Aliotti finished 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. The River Cats and Grizzlies will go at it again tomorrow night on Toyota Family Value Tuesday in game two of the four-game series. Right-hander Josh Lindblom (4-3, 5.88 ERA) of Sacramento will be pitted against Fresno southpaw Mike Kickham (6-5, 3.68 ERA) with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
