Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA -Kyle Hendricks picked up his PCL-leading 10th victory and Brett Jackson provided the offensive support with a season-high three RBI in the Iowa Cubs (45-38) 5-3 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers (44-40) in game one of a day/night double-header on Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. The Cubs have won the first two games of this five-game series, and have gone 11-3 in their last 14 games.

Hendricks gave up two runs on four hits in a 35-pitch opening inning, but surrendered just a solo homer over his final five frames. The right-hander scattered eight hits and didn't walk a batter, while striking out seven in his 96-pitch, six-inning effort. Hendricks posted his 11th quality start in 16 outings to win his fourth game in a row. He becomes the eighth pitcher in minor league baseball this season to reach double-digit victories.

In an early 2-0 hole, the Cubs' took the lead by scoring three runs off Storm Chasers starter Luis Coleman in the first two innings. Matt Szczur drew a one-out walk in the opening frame, moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on Chris Valaika's 18th double -- and 42nd RBI -- of the season. The bottom third of the order produced the next two runs for Iowa to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead. A one-out walk to Logan Watkins and a double to Eli Whiteside preceded a two-run triple by Jackson high off the center field wall. The three-base hit was Jackson's 20th in an Iowa uniform, moving him into a tie for second in franchise history with Sam Fuld.

The Storm Chasers knotted the game at three in the fourth inning when Francisco Pena belted his team-leading 14th home run -- and second in as many days -- over the wall in right field. The Cubs answered an inning later by using their legs to take the lead off LH Tim Collins. Arismendy Alcantara extended his season-best hitting streak to 10 games with a one-out single and Szczur followed with another single. With Javy Baez batting, Alcantara and Szczur executed a perfect double steal to put the go-ahead run at third base. Three pitches later, Baez lofted a deep enough fly ball to center field to score Alcantara and give the Cubs a 4-3 advantage. For Alcantara, it was his team-leading 19th stolen base, and the Cubs' three steals on the afternoon gave them 81 on the year, which is second in the PCL.

The bottom third of the batting order came through, once again, in the sixth inning to provide the Cubs with an insurance run. Watkins singled and Whiteside walked to set up a Jackson RBI single to left field to give the Cubs a 5-3 advantage.

LH Zac Rosscup worked a perfect seventh inning in relief of Hendricks to earn his first save of the season, and the fifth of his career. Rosscup has a 2.07 ERA (6ER/26.1IP) in 26 appearances in his Iowa career.

The Cubs improved to 24-4 in days this season, including a 16-2 mark at Principal Park.

Brian Bocock and Johnny Giavotella had the only multi-hit games for Omaha, while a two-run single from Matt Fields highlighted their attack.

The Cubs and Storm Chasers will play the nightcap of this double-header at 7:05. RH Clayton Mortensen (3-0, 0.99) will take the mound for the Storm Chasers. The game will be seven-innings, broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45 p.m.
