Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
LAST NIGHT'S LOSS: Omaha lost the series opener and their lead in the division as the Iowa Cubs erased the Chasers 4-0 lead (spoiling Sugar Ray Marimon's team-leading eighth quality start) and notched Omaha's second walk-off loss in the last four days in the 10th. Omaha has lost back-to-back road games for the first time since the May 21 doubleheader at Nashville.
I-OWN-A: With last night's loss, Omaha has now dropped 13 of their last 15 games at Principal Park dating back to the final three games of the 2012 season (1-7 last season).
A DES MOINES DOUBLEHEADER: The Storm Chasers and I-Cubs will lock up for their second doubleheader this season, as the two teams split a May 1 twin bill. However in their PCL history, Omaha and Iowa have only played five total doubleheaders since both teams joined the league. In the three doubleheaders played at Principal Park (the others being in 2009 and 2005), Omaha has split two and lost both games in one. Overall in the five doubleheaders between the two teams, Omaha has yet to notch a twin bill sweep (three splits and two losses).
A GOOD START: Clayton Mortensen will start Game 2 tonight, and since he joined the team in late May (recovering from offseason hip surgery) he has allowed only three earned runs (four runs total) in 27.1 innings. His 0.99 ERA in that time is the second best only to Brad Mills (0.69 ERA) since he rejoined Omaha, and Omaha is undefeated in his three starts this season.
JUNE LEADERS: In the month of June, these Omaha players ranked in the top ten in the PCL: Whit Merrifield had the second best average at .392 and tied for the third most doubles at ten, Matt Fields was tied for the second most homers at seven and Johnny Giavotella was tied for the fifth most RBI at 21. Pitching leaders included Clayton Mortensen with a PCL-leading 1.21 ERA and the third best WHIP at 0.94, Aaron Brooks was tied for the fourth most wins with three, Ryan Verdugo was tied for the ninth most strikeouts at 31 with the third best opponent average at .190 and Spencer Patton was tied for the seventh most saves at four.
JOHNNY BE GOOD: Johnny Giavotella had a team-leading 21 RBI in the month of June (tied for fifth most in the PCL). His 225 RBI in 358 games with Omaha is tied for 7th most in team history with Rondin Johnson (1984-88). Gio has 20 RBI in his last 19 games (after he had just 3 RBI in his first 16 games with Omaha after returning from a stint with the Royals on May 23).
ALLOWING A HIT PARADE: Omaha has allowed double-digit hits in four straight games (tying their season high which was on May 9-12 vs Round Rock/New Orleans). They have allowed ten hits or more in eight of the last eleven games, after they had allowed double-digit hits in only seven of the previous 35 games dating from May 13 to June 17 before this stretch.
