LANSING, Mich. - Jeremy Barfield's bloop single broke up Joel Carreño's no-hitter with one out in the eighth inning, and the Lansing Lugnuts (15-20; 41-63) went on to a one-hit shutout victory over the Kane County Cougars (16-20; 57-49), 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park.

Carreño set down the first 15 Cougars he faced, seeing the spell broken on a lead-off walk to Dusty Napoleon in the sixth. Carlos Arrieche followed with a flare down the right field line that Johermyn Chavez could not catch -- but quickly recovered to fire to second base, forcing out Napoleon and keeping the no-hitter alive.

Carreño set down the side in the seventh and induced a Mike Spina groundout to open the eighth before Barfield poked a soft liner just beyond the dive of second baseman Justin McClanahan, evoking a standing ovation from the Oldsmobile Park crowd.

Lugnuts manager Clayton McCullough took the moment to relieve Carreño with Jason Roenicke, who set down the final five Cougars batsmen to clinch Lansing's second shutout of the season.

Carreño (1-2) finished the game with nine strikeouts, earning his first win with the Lugnuts.

Kane County starter Anvioris Ramirez (1-1), like Carreño a native of San Cristobal, Domincan Republic, allowed eight runs and three hits over six innings to suffer the loss.

Lansing shortstop Tyler Pastornicky singled, doubled, and tripled, driving in two runs, to spearhead a 12-hit offensive attack. Balbino Fuenmayor, Justin McClanahan, and Mark Sobolewski each chipped in a pair of base hits to support the cause.

The Lugnuts finished their six-game homestand with a 3-3 record. At 7:05 p.m. on Monday, Lansing takes to the road to begin a four-game series in Fort Wayne, Lugnuts right-hander Chase Lirette (3-2, 4.25) opposing TinCaps right-hander Stiven Osuna (8-6, 3.83).
