South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The Peoria Chiefs broke a tie with one run in the top of the ninth to sweep the South Bend Silver Hawks by a score of 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium. The Silver Hawks rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as South Bend was swept for the sixth time this season.

Peoria took the lead in the ninth with a bases loaded RBI single by first baseman Rebel Ridling. South Bend reliever Jordan Meaker (LP, 3-1) allowed a one out pinch-hit single to Nelson Perez, who advanced to third after Meaker issued walks to Brett Jackson and Ryan Flaherty. Meaker got ahead of Ridling 0-2 before the all-star poked a breaking ball into right field. The RBI was Ridling's second of the game, putting him into a tie for first in the Midwest League with 75.

Trailing 4-1, South Bend tied up the game in the bottom of the seventh off of Peoria reliever Marcus Hatley (ND). Nelson Gomez and Chris Davis walked and advanced a base each on a wild pitch by Hatley. Gomez scored on a single by Jake Elmore that was lost in the sun by Peoria second baseman DJ LeMahieu to make it 4-2.

After Kevin Kreier (WP, 5-2) came in to replace Hatley, Davis knocked the ball out of catcher Mario Mercedes' glove to score on a fielder's choice by Reynaldo Navarro. Navarro scored later in the inning on a two out single by AJ Pollock to even up the score at four.

Peoria took a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth off of South Bend starter Randy Rodriguez (ND). With runners on second and third, LeMahieu tripled down the right field line to drive in two. Elmore's throw to third was then wide of the bag, allowing LaMahieu to come home and finish the rally. The Chiefs tacked on another in the seventh with a RBI single by Ridling.

South Bend opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third. Isaias Asencio doubled to lead off the inning against Peoria starter Jeff Antigua (ND). Antigua retired the next two batters before Navarro came through with a two out RBI double to score Asencio and put the Silver Hawks on top 1-0.

The Silver Hawks were swept just one series after sweeping the Quad Cities River Bandits. South Bend finished the home stand at 3-3 and fell to 12-11 against the Western Division in the second half. The Silver Hawks will see all Eastern Division squads from here on out.

The Silver Hawks will open a four game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps tomorrow night in Grand Rapids beginning at 7:00 PM Eastern Time. LHP Wade Miley (4-7, 4.14 ERA) will start for South Bend, with West Michigan sending RHP Luke Putkonen (6-7, 3.68 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
