Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits got five strong innings from Miguel Tapia and a pair of key extra-base hits from Jarred Bogany on Sunday afternoon, winning the game and the series with a 5-3 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Quad Cities (16-19, 46-59) won the rubber match of the three-game series against the Timber Rattlers to finish their season-series with a 6-4 record. Wisconsin (14-21, 48-57) did not go down without a fight, however, rallying for a pair of runs in the ninth inning before eventually stranding the potential game-tying run on base.

The Timber Rattlers also took an early lead on Sunday, as Juan Sanchez opened the bottom of the first with a bunt-single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Just three pitches later, Pete Fatse lined a double down the left field line to score the runner for a 1-0 lead.

But River Bandits starter Miguel Tapia (2-3) bounced right back, retiring the next three men to end the inning and going on to set down the next eight batters in order. Over five impressive frames, the hard-throwing Dominican struck out six without issuing a walk and allowed just one unearned run on four hits to earn the win.

Meanwhile, the Quad Cities offense broke through against Timber Rattlers' starter Evan Frederickson in the fifth. Jarred Bogany led off the inning with a triple that dropped in fair down the right field line beyond a diving outfielder. After a wild pitch brought Bogany home with the game-tying run, Jose Garcia drew a walk, stole second and moved to third on an error. Later in the frame Osvaldo Morales reached base on a fielder's choice groundout, scoring the runner for a 2-1 lead.

The River Bandits grew the advantage over the later innings. Frederick Parejo chipped in with a run-scoring double in the seventh inning, while Bogany clubbed a two-run homer in the eighth that gave Quad Cities a 5-1 lead.

The late homer proved to be a crucial one as the Timber Rattlers charged hard in the bottom of the ninth inning. Erik Miller and Sanchez each contributed RBI singles to pull Wisconsin to within 5-3 with men at the corners and two away. But with the potential game-tying run aboard, reliever Matt Frevert came in and retired the only man he faced, inducing a game-ending groundout to first to notch his third save of the year.

Even Frederickson (3-7) suffered the loss for Wisconsin, allowing two runs - one earned - on four hits and five walks over 4.1 frames.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits return to Modern Woodmen Park on Monday for a four-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels that starts with Klement's Dollar Dog Night! An Economic Stimulus Tuesday follows with two-for-one tickets and a free meal for kids 12 an under, while the Quad Cities Homebuilders & Remodelers Association helps pack the park for a game that will be themed as Awful Night. Wednesday will be Halloween in August with candy, candy and MORE candy, as Optimists Youth Appreciation Night takes over the ballpark on a Rhythm City Guaranteed Prize WINS-day and an IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union Youth Night. The homestand concludes with a special Thirst-day Thursday that will feature a post-game fireworks show in addition to $2 drink specials, not to mention the first ever appearance by the Pillow Fight League's female stars in Iowa!
