WILK, GUEZ LEAD WAY IN ‘CAPS' VICTORY

COMSTOCK PARK, MI- Adam Wilk made his Midwest League debut Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark and pitched the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 10-4 drubbing of the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Wilk allowed 2 hits in 6 shutout innings as he gathered 7 strikeouts for his first win. The Whitecaps win the series two-games-to-one and are now 4-2 after six games on their 10-game home stand.

West Michigan quickly built a 3-0 lead after an inning of play. Eight men came to the plate in the first, and Bryan Pounds, Ben Guez, and Mike Gosse all had RBI singles.

Geuz drove a pitch over the left field wall for his ninth home run of the year in the fifth. The two-run shot brought home Billy Nowlin for a 5-0 Whitecaps' lead.

In the sixth, Luis Salas, Brent Wyatt, and Billy Nowlin all scored as the ‘Caps benefited from some shaky defense and poor pitching by the Kernels.

The 8-0 ‘Caps' lead grew to 10-0 in the bottom of the seventh when Billy Nowlin picked up an RBI hit, and Ben Guez laced a double to left to score Nowlin. Guez became the first Whitecap to collect 5 hits in a game this season.

Cedar Rapids put together 4 runs in the ninth highlighted by Matt Crawford's three-run home run. Brent Wyatt ended the game for the ‘Caps with a sparkling backhand play at third to throw out Anel De Los Santos.

Kernels' starter Manaurys Correa took the loss with the rocky outing. Correa falls to 6-7 on year.

Alden Carrithers was the only other ‘Cap besides Guez to have multiple hits. Eight of the nine starters had at least one.

West Michigan will open up a four-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks on Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST.
