Carolina Mudcats Transactions

June 19, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC --- The Cincinnati Reds have made a pair of transactions impacting their Double-A affiliate Carolina Mudcats prior to the Mudcats' middle game of a five-game set against Tennessee.

IF Yonder Alonso has been placed on the seven-day disabled list with a broken hamate bone in his right hand. Alonso suffered the injury taking a swing on a 3-0 fastball in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader against Tennessee. Alonso will be further assessed in the coming few days to determine the course of action for healing and rehabilitation. There has been no timetable set for Alonso's return as of yet. Alonso was the Reds' first round pick (#8 overall) in last year's draft, and entered the season as Cincinnati's top-ranked prospect by Baseball America. Alonso left the Florida State League leading the circuit in RBI while hitting .302 with seven home runs. In Alonso's time with the Mudcats, he was hitting .246 with one homer and eight RBI, although his numbers didn't adequately reflect how well he was hitting the ball.

To replace Alonso on the active roster, OF Denis Phipps has been assigned to Carolina from High-A Sarasota and will be in uniform tonight for Carolina.

The Mudcats remain at the Southern League limit of 24 players, and a revised roster is attached.

With three games remaining in the first half, the Mudcats trail first place Huntsville by 1/2 game. The Stars play a 6:00 PM ET doubleheader at Birmingham tonight.

Carolina returns home to open the second half on Monday night against the Jacksonville Suns at 7:15 PM ET.
