Barons Sweep Stars in Double-Header

June 19, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

With the playoffs already clinched, the Barons just keep on winning. The team from the Magic City extended its season-long nine-game winning streak by taking both games of a double-header Friday, defeating Huntsville by scores of 4-2 - in nine innings - and 11-0.

Stefan Gartrell was the big star of game one, hitting a two-run, game-tying home run in the fifth inning and a game-winning, two-run, walk-off home run in the ninth inning.

John Lujan (1-3, 4.09) picked up the win after pitching two innings of scoreless relief. John Ely started the game and went seven innings, allowing just two first-inning runs.

Casey Baron (4-3, 2.01) served up Gartrell's second home run to take the loss.

In game two, the Barons benefited from six Huntsville errors, including four errors in a nine-run eighth inning. The Barons sent 14 batters to the plate that inning.

Newcomer Christian Marrero went 1-for-4 on the night but hit a, three-run triple in the eighth inning. He is now 2-for-8 with a home run, a triple and five RBI in two games as a Baron.

CJ Lang went 1-for-2 to extend his season-long hitting streak to 11 games.

Matt Zaleski (3-0, 2.15) picked up his third win on the year after tossing five shutout innings. Matt Long and Ryan Rote finished the shutout, pitching an inning a piece. It marks the third shutout the pitching staff has thrown during the team's nine-game winning streak and the fourth shutout in June.

The Barons have now swept all three of their double-headers this season. The sweep guarantees another series victory for the Barons. The team will finish the first half 11-0-3 in series play, including a perfect 7-0-0 at Regions Park.

The Barons and Stars will play the fifth game of the series Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Right hander Daniel Hudson will make his Double-A debut for the Barons after earning a promotion from Winston-Salem on Thursday. Left hander Bob Bramhall (3-3, 6.28) will go for Huntsville.
