Mobile BayBears News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - An early 6-0 deficit proved too much for the BayBears to overcome on Friday night at the Baseball Grounds as the Jacksonville Suns hung on for a 6-4 victory.
Cody Evans (3-7) surrendered a season-high 11 hits over five frames with Jacksonville (33-35) prodding at him in the first inning as Logan Morrison lifted a two-out solo home run to put the Suns on the board. An inning later, the Suns would strike for two more as Lee Mitchell singled and scored on a base hit by Brad Davis. Tim Torres also singled, and he came home on a sac fly by Bryan Petersen to make it 3-0.
Graham Taylor (4-5) wasn't perfect either, but he was good enough through his 6 1/3 innings as he steered the BayBears (37-31) away from a couple scoring opportunities. The BayBears' first chance was in the fifth when Orlando Mercado singled and took third on a two-bagger by Mark Hallberg, but a leaping grab by Torres on an Evans liner and an Evan Frey pop out stopped the rally.
In the meantime, the Suns continued to add on as they struck for three in the home half of the fifth Scott Cousins singling and scoring on a sac fly by Andy Jenkins. After a walk and a single, Davis came through again with a two-run double to bring home Mitchell and Torres.
Taylor finally bent in the sixth as Yunesky Sanchez walked and advanced to third on a single by Sean Coughlin. A wild pitch allowed Sanchez to touch the plate while Ricardo Sosa brought in Coughlin as he blasted a two-out, two-run homer, slicing the Jacksonville lead in half.
In the seventh, the BayBears loaded the bags with one out while chasing Taylor from the contest, but Jay Voss induced Chris Rahl into an inning-ending double play. The BayBears put men on first and third with no outs in the ninth, but Hallberg was picked off by Matt Peterson (S, 15) who proceeded to retire the next two hitters including James Skelton who drove in Pete Clifford with a sac fly.
Game four between the BayBears and Suns is Saturday night at 6:05 central time with Barry Enright (5-4, 3.47) getting the start. The BayBears return home to host the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on Monday, June 22 at 7:05 p.m. where 51 America's Junior Miss contestants will simultaneously throw out a ceremonial first pitch.
