Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC-- The Carolina Mudcats had the lead going into the ninth inning against the Jacksonville Suns, but that did not hold, as the Suns scored three runs in the top of the ninth to get the 6-5 win at Five County Stadium on Thursday night.

Travis Webb came in to pitch in the top of the 7th trying to preserve the Mudcats 4-2 lead and end their six-game losing streak. After a scoreless 7th inning, Webb ran into trouble in the top of 8th, with Negrych hitting an RBI-singleto cut the lead to one. Manager David Bell had seen enough and brought Chris Mobley in to finish the inning.

Mobley came back in the top of the 9th ready to face the bottom of the order and get the save. The situation was too good to be true as Mobley gave up a leadoff double to Kyle Skipworth. After getting Ryan Curry to fly out to left field, Luke Montz stepped into the batters box as a pinch hitter. Montz hit a bomb to left center field that tied the game up at five all. The Suns added another run off Donnie Joseph to take a 6-5 going into the bottom of the 9th.

Mudcats' pitcher Brandon Hynick (1-2, 4.06ERA) pitched 6 innings of 2-run ball and drove in a run as the Mudcats lost for the seventh straight game.

Yasmani Grandal hit a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 2nd inning to tie the game up at two runs apiece. Hynick helped his performance with an RBI double in the 4th to give the Mudcats a 3-2 lead and Neftali Soto hit his team leading 19th homerun in the 5th to put the Mudcats up 4-2. Hynick worked 6 complete innings giving up nine hits and striking out two in his no decision.

Omar Poveda took the mound for the Jacksonville Suns and pitched six complete innings, giving up 4 runs, 5 hits and striking out one.

Grandal came up to the plate with two outs in the ninth, representing the winning run and trying to replicate his earlier success. However, it was not meant to be as Grandal hit a rocket to the shortstop Gutierrez who made a diving catch for the final out of the game.

Benjamin picks up the win for the Suns and Rosario got his 21st save of the season. For the Mudcats, Mobley is tagged with the blown save and the loss. The Mudcats have now lost seven straight games, their longest losing streak of the season.

James Avery (5-9, 4.18ERA) will take the mound for the Mudcats against Suns pitcher Graham Taylor (2-5, 4.11ERA) tomorrow night at 7:15pm.
