Smokies Fall to Biscuits 5-1 Thursday Night

Montgomery, Ala. - The Tennessee Smokies dropped their second game in a row to the Montgomery Biscuits Thursday night 5-1 at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama. With the loss, Tennessee drops to 58-45 overall while the Biscuits improve to 52-51.

Montgomery got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning after Tim Beckham would single and Cole Figueroa walked to put runners on first and second with only one out. Both runners would advance a base after Trey McNutt threw a wild pitch and after a strikeout and a walk to load the bases, Greg Sexton would single with the bases loaded to score Beckham and Figueroa to take a 2-0 lead.

The Smokies would cut the lead in half in the second inning with three two-out singles in a row. Luis Flores singled to left field and Matt Camp followed up with another hit to put runners on first and second. Jae-Hoon Ha hit the third single in a row to score Flores and make it a 2-1 ballgame.

The Biscuits answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning after Shawn O'Malley would walk with two outs. Beckham would single to put runners on the corners and Figueroa would knock a base hit to left to score O'Malley and increase their lead to 3-1. Montgomery would add to their lead in the fourth when Isaias Velasquez would lead off the inning with a single and steal second base to move into scoring position. O'Malley would double home Velasquez and after O'Malley advanced to third on a wild pitch, Figueroa would double home O'Malley to put the score at 5-1.

Kevin Rhoderick, Jeff Beliveau, and Rafael Dolis combined to pitch the final four innings for the Smokies, allowing just one hit and no runs combined.

RHP Trey McNutt (1-4) took the loss for the Smokies, giving up five runs on seven hits in four innings, while RHP Shane Dyer (5-6) got the win for the Biscuits, pitching six innings and only giving up one earned run. Frank De Los Santos pitched the final three innings for the Biscuits, allowing just one hit and earning his third save of the season.

The Smokies and Biscuits will continue their series on Friday evening from Riverwalk Stadium with the first pitch set for 8:05 p.m. CST. RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx (1-1 6.00) will be on the mound for Tennessee and RHP Alexander Colome (1-0 1.69) will start for the Biscuits.
