PEARL, Miss. - A.J. Pollock turned a deficit into an advantage as he knocked home three runs in the top of the seventh with a bases-loaded double to carry the BayBears to a 5-3 victory over the Mississippi Braves on Thursday night at Trustmark Park.
Trailing 3-2, Josh Ford started the seventh-inning rally for the BayBears (63-40, 25-8) with an infield single and moved to third when Ollie Linton crushed a ground-rule double to the gap in left-center. After a pitching change, J.J. Hoover walked Adam Eaton to fill the bags before Pollock bruised a ball to right-center, splitting the outfielders and sending all three runners to the plate.
Kyler Newby helped preserve the lead as he tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Mike DeMark (S, 6) notched a perfect ninth inning for the second straight to hand Mississippi (40-63, 15-18) their third consecutive defeat in the series.
Wes Roemer (7-6) started for the BayBears and struggled at the top as he surrendered a run in each of the first three innings. Donell Linares singled Antoan Richardson to the plate in the first. Ed Lucas doubled and scored on an error by Paul Goldschmidt in the second to give the Braves their first lead of the series while Ernesto Mejia cracked a run-scoring double to bring home Linares in the third frame.
Luis Avilan (2-6) was solid for the M-Braves as he pitched into the seventh inning for the first time this season. He gave up eight hits including three singles in the first. It was Taylor Harbin's smack to left-center that invited Jake Elmore home with the first run. Elmore also scored in the sixth on a fielder's choice from Harbin to cut the BayBear disadvantage to 3-2.
The BayBears battle the Braves in the fourth of their five-game set on Friday night at 7:05 from Trustmark Park. Lefty Patrick Corbin (8-5) gets the start for the BayBears against fellow southpaw Brett Oberholtzer (8-9). The BayBears are back home on Sunday night to host the Chattanooga Lookouts at 6:05 from Hank Aaron Stadium.
