August 3, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Carolina Mudcats News Release
Fayetteville, N.C. - Brian Fitzpatrick made his debut for the Mudcats, and Avina homers as Mudcats fell late to Woodpeckers.
Carolina (20-13, 52-43) struck early in the first with a Daniel Guilarte sacrifice fly. Fayetteville (15-18, 45-54) tied the game in the bottom of the first with a Ryan Johnson double. The Mudcats took the lead right back in the second inning with a Jace Avina home run.
The game was a defensive battle with both teams struggling to put runs on the board. Carolina had a 2-1 lead for most of the game, putting themselves in a position to win. The Mudcats could not convert on their chances, going zero for five with runners in scoring position. Carolina had five hits throughout the game and could not string together enough offense to win.
Fayetteville also struggled to convert on their chances until the ninth inning. Down two with two outs the Woodpeckers put together three straight singles to steal the game and take the series lead.
Patricio Aquino started on the mound for the Mudcats, pitching five innings. Aquino gave up six hits, allowed one run, and struck out four in the start. Brian Fitzpatrick (BS, 1) made his Carolina debut in the loss pitching three innings. Fitzpatrick had a good start to his debut allowing only one hit and having four strikeouts but then walked two batters in the ninth that led to the Woodpecker's comeback. Jefferson Figueroa (L, 1-1) picked up the loss allowing three hits and the game-winning run.
Carolina looks to even the series Friday with the start time at 7:05 p.m. Will Rudy is expected to get the start in the game four matchup.
