Arkansas Travelers News Release

Springfield, MO - The second half lead for the Arkansas Travelers was slimmed to just one game after a 6-3 loss to the Springfield Cardinals on Tuesday night at Hammons Field.

Arkansas had at least one baserunner in all nine innings and manufactured 14 total hits, but the Travs finished just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Conversely, the Cardinals scored four of their six runs with two outs, including a two-run RF David Washington home run in the second.

Arkansas scored a run in the first on a 3B Brian Hernandez RBI single, but the Washington longball put the Cards on top in the second.

The Travs tied the game 2-2 in the fourth thanks to back-to-back doubles from Hernandez and 1B Wade Hinkle, but the relentless Cardinals responded with two in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead for good.

Arkansas CF Chad Hinshaw recorded the sixth four-hit game for the Travs this year, finishing 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, a double and a run scored.

Hernandez also reached base four times, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, the RBI and a walk.

Travs starter RHP Kyle McGowin lasted 5.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. The five K's put McGowin atop the Texas League with 117 total on the season.

LHP Chris O'Grady surrendered a run over his 1.1 innings after McGowin and RHP Geoff Broussard pitched a scoreless eighth.

Arkansas was able to tag LHP Jimmy Reed for 10 hits over 4.2 innings, but Reed buckled down with men on base. RHP Robby Rowland (W, 1-2) earned the victory for Springfield with 1.2 scoreless innings after RHP Joey Donofrio pitched 1.2 of his own.

Hinkle and SS Drew Maggi both recorded two hits for the second straight night.

Hinshaw has successfully stolen 19 bases since July 28, seven more than anyone in the Texas League over that stretch.

With the loss, Arkansas clings on to a one game lead over the Springfield Cardinals in the Texas League North second half standings with six games to play, three against Springfield. Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for Wednesday night at Hammons Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
