Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Kyle Westwood pitched seven shutout innings and Corpus Christi struck for six in the second on the way to a 10-2 mashing of Frisco Tuesday at Whataburger Field before 4,209.
The victory was Corpus Christi's 84th of 2015, a team record. The 2013 club held the previous standard.
Westwood (10-7) scattered five hits and struck out five in a 102-pitch performance (65 strikes). He stranded two runners each in the sixth and seventh after facing two over the minimum through five.
Frisco (31-32; 60-73) averted a shutout in the eighth when J.T. Wise hit a two-run homer off Albert Minnis. The inning was punctuated by three outstanding defensive plays by third baseman Chan-Jong Moon.
Corpus Christi loaded the bases twice during the first against Jose Leclerc (6-7), but came away with just a run. Lead-off man George Springer smoked a hustling double past third baseman Luis Mendez. Springer took third on Danry Vasquez's soft single to center and crossed when Colin Moran followed suit.
Springer attacked the first pitch he saw from Leclerc, Vasquez and Moran 1-0 offerings. The inning turned on a double play for the first two outs when right fielder Preston Beck caught Jon Kemmer's fly and threw out Vasquez, who was attempting to score.
The Hooks (36-28; 84-50) wouldn't be thwarted in their second turn, cranking out six runs with two out. Highlights included another Moran RBI single, a Kemmer run-scoring triple off the batter's eye, Jack Mayfield's RBI double, and a run-producing single from Conrad Gregor. Moran scored on a wild pitch, Vasquez when Beck committed a throwing error.
In all, Corpus Christi sent 11 batters to the plate. Leclerc, pulled for Chad James after issuing his third walk of the inning and fourth overall, lasted just 1 2/3 innings and 60 pitches (29). He was tagged for eight hits.
The Hooks mounted a fifth-inning threat, Alfredo Gonzalez and Moon with opening singles and Moran struck by a pitch, but James retired A.J. Reed on a bases-full liner to center for the final out.
Kemmer began the sixth by singling to deep short and advanced to second on a throwing error. Two outs later, Gonzalez reached for the third time on an RBI single. Moon followed with a double into the left-field corner, pushing the lead to 9-0.
Reed's homer off Juan Grullon to the back of the right-field bullpen wall put Corpus Christi in double digits. It was the Minor League-leading 34th round-tripper for Reed; he has 11 as a Texas League player.
Kemmer has hit in 11 consecutive games.
Francis Martes (0-0) takes the ball for Corpus Christi Wednesday at 7:05 against lefty Chad Bell (7-12), the current Texas League Pitcher of the Week. It's Whataburger Family Day, so purchase a ticket at the box office and get your child's ticket free.
