CORPUS CHRISTI - Pinch-hitter Yeison Asencio's three-run homer in the ninth lifted San Antonio to an 11-9 win over Corpus Christi Monday at Whataburger Field before 4,050.
Asencio, hitting for No. 9-hole batter Adolfo Reina, belted a no-doubter to left off Chris Cotton (2-1). The Missions pushed four across against Cotton. Gabriel Quintana's single to left plated Tyson Gillies, who began the rally with an infield hit. Quintana and Duanel Jones (single) were aboard for Asencio.
Eury De La Rosa then picked up his seventh save by wriggling out of a two-on, one-out jam.
Leading 8-7 after 7 ½ innings, the Hooks added a run off Elliot Morris (4-9). Danry Vasquez doubled to right-center, took third on a wild pitch, and scored when A.J. Reed hit into a fielder's choice.
Corpus Christi (35-28; 83-50) held an 8-4 lead after four, but the Missions stormed back with three seventh-inning scores.
San Antonio (26-37; 57-76) posted a first-inning unearned run off Chris Devenski. Benji Gonzalez reached on an error to open the game and scored thanks to consecutive two-out singles from Diego Goris and Gillies.
Quintana's first Double-A home run gave the Missions a 2-0 second-inning advantage.
Chan-Jong Moon began the Hooks third by drilling a line-drive home run just inside the right-field pole, and Corpus Christi tied the contest when Vasquez (one-out double) crossed on a throwing error by second baseman Taylor Lindsey. Vasquez advanced to third on a Colin Moran single and home when Lindsey's attempt to get batter-runner Jon Kemmer went wide of the first-base bag.
Lindsey stroked a one-out single to right before Quintana's second yard shot of the night, a 441-foot blast over the left-field berm. They represented the Missions' only fourth-inning runs as Devenski stranded three in a four-hit, one-walk frame.
That was regrettable for San Antonio, as Corpus Christi immediately mounted a six-run rally while sending 11 to the plate and building an 8-4 lead through four. The production was fueled by five hits, three errors, and two walks. Vasquez and Kemmer had two-run doubles, Moon and Conrad Gregor RBI singles. Lindsey was charged with two errors.
Missions starter Dennis O'Grady failed to get through the fourth, retiring after 3 2/3 innings, eight runs (three earned), nine hits, three walks, and three strikeouts. The next two San Antonio hurlers, Adam Cimber and Chris Rearick, combined for 3 1/3 scoreless and four strikeouts.
Consecutive one-out doubles by Alberth Martinez and Goris made it 8-5 in the seventh and chased Devenski. Goris ultimately scored on a balk by reliever Reymin Guduan and Jones' RBI ground out drew the Missions to within one at 8-7.
Devenski, responsible for six runs (five earned), 10 hits, a walk and seven strikeouts, threw 100 pitches (73) over 6 1/3.
Vasquez, who doubled and scored thrice Monday, has a nine-game hitting streak, Kemmer a 10-gamer. Auston Bousfield owns a seven-game streak for San Antonio.
Corpus Christi's Kyle Westwood (9-7) faces Jose Leclerc (6-6) Tuesday at 7:05 in the first of four between the Hooks and Frisco.
