(Eastlake, OH) â Rafael Perez struck out seven in six scoreless innings, and Bill Peavey blasted a three-run home run to lead the Lake County Captains to their third straight win and a 4-0 shutout of the Delmarva Shorebirds in front of over 8,072 fans Friday night at Eastlake Ballpark.
Perez (1-5), who surrendered ten runs with six walks in his last outing against Delmarva (28-33) just five days ago, allowed just four hits and walked one in his six innings of work Friday night. The Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year at Burlington last year, Perez earned his first win in ten starts this season.
Matt Whitney and Mike Conroy led off the sixth with singles, and Peavey followed with a home run to right-center, his fifth of the season. Peavey is now 4-for-7 with two homers and five RBI's in two games against Delmarva this season.
Luis Cotto gave the Captains (30-31) another run in the eighth, when he singled in Mike Conroy, who led off the inning with his league-leading 8th triple of the season.
Whitney finished 1-for-4 with a single, and is now hitting .333 (5-15) in four games at Lake County.
Josh Potter (0-1) gave up four hits and walked two in three innings of relief for the Shorebirds, and took the loss after conceding the homer to Peavey.
The Captains open up a six-game road trip with a 7:05 p.m. start at Hagerstown on Saturday night. Right-hander Sean Smith (6-2, 3.70) will take the hill for Lake County against southpaw Travis Nesmith (1-4, 4.29) of Hagerstown.
Notes: Catcher Javi Herrera was promoted to AA Akron Friday morning, giving Josh Noviskey the start...Noviskey went 1-for-3 in the game...The Captains are now 5-5 in June after playing over the .500 clip in May (16-14)...8,072 fans attended Friday's game at Eastlake Ballpark, a season-high...Lake County is now four games over .500 at home (18-14), but five games under on the road (12-17)...The Captains have now registered double digit hits in three out of the last four games, and at least nine in their last four...Lake County ripped 24 hits against Delmarva pitching in the two-game weekend series....The Captains are now 4-1 in Friday night home games.
