
Captains Nipped by Crawdads 2-1

(Eastlake, OH) - Matt Brown hit a solo home run in the ninth inning but it wasn't enough as the Hickory Crawdads defeated the Lake County Captains 2-1 on Thursday. All the runs in the game came via the long ball. The Captains bullpen pitched 16.1 innings in the series and allowed only one run. The final 13.1 innings they pitched were scoreless.
The Crawdads got on the board in the third inning when Jordy Mercer hit a solo home run off of Captains starter Ryan Miller to take a 1-0 lead. The lead was raised to 2-0 on a solo home run by Matt Cavagnaro in the fifth inning. The Captains lone run came in the ninth on a solo home run from Matt Brown.
Miller took the loss giving up two runs on only two hits, both home runs, walking four and striking out four in 4.2 innings of work. His record is now 7-4 and he has not picked up a win since May 18th. John Gaub relieved Miller and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings striking out two. Gary Campfield came on in the eighth inning and pitched two scoreless innings as well. Bradley Clapp got the win to up his record to 3-6 tossing six scoreless innings and Charles Benoit picked up his first save.
The Captains will continue their homestand by hosting the Asheville Tourists for four games beginning Friday at 7:05 PM. The Captains will send RHP Chris Archer (2-8, 4.05) to the mound against the Tourists RHP Robinson Fabian (2-2, 5.40). All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
Friday will be a fireworks night at Classic Park with the game beginning at 7:05 PM. One lucky fan at Friday night's game will win a 50-inch Plasma HTDV. Saturday will also be a fireworks night at Classic Park with game time at 7:05 PM. Saturday is Time Warner Cable Night where the first 1,500 fans who enter Classic Park will receive a logo baseball courtesy of Time Warner Cable. SpongeBob SquarePants will also make a special appearance on Saturday night. The post-game fireworks on Saturday night will be presented by Chick-fil-A, and two lucky fans at the game will each win one free year of Chick-fil-A.
Sunday at 1:05 PM is a Plevin and Gallucci Family Fun Day where fans can meet Captains players prior to the game and get autographs and kids can run the bases after the game presented by Andrews Osborne Academy. Also the first 1,500 fans will receive a Fausto Carmona bobblehead presented by Lake Hospital System.
Tickets for all Captains home games including the 2008 SAL Playoffs are on sale at the Classic Park box office, by phone at 440-954-WINS (9467) or at captainsbaseball.com. Tickets for the Playoffs remain the same as regular season game tickets, $9 reserved seat, $7 bleachers, juniors, and seniors, $6 lawn. Lawn seats for the Playoffs will only be sold once the reserved seats and bleachers are sold out. The $7 group rate will still apply to groups of 20 or more.
