Captains Falter at Great Lakes

(Midland, MI) - The Lake County Captains (23-20) dropped a 9-1 decision to the Great Lakes Loons (22-21) on Tuesday at Dow Diamond. The Loons blasted a home run in each of the first three innings to power them to victory in game one of the six-game series.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Ryan Ward sent a solo home run to the opposite field. He cleared the wall in left field to put the Loons on top, 1-0.

The Loons extended their lead with another homer in the second. Carson Taylor led off with a slicing fly ball down the left field line that just skidded over the wall to make the score 2-0, Loons.

The Captains scored their only run of the game in the top of the third. Quentin Holmes reached to start the inning on a Great Lakes error. Will Brennan singled to move Holmes to second, then they both advanced 90 feet on a fly out to center by Brayan Rocchio. With one out, Holmes came home to score on a groundout by Bryan Lavastida to put the Captains on the scoreboard. The run cut the Loons' lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Loons connected for their third home run in as many innings against Captains' starter Hunter Gaddis. With one out, Andy Pages launched his league-leading 13th home run of the season to put the Loons back up by two runs, 3-1.

The Loons widened their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Three straight singles loaded the bases and Joe Vranesh cleared the bags with a three-run double down the left field line. After Gaddis walked Andy Pages with two outs, Ward singled to left to plate Vranesh and push the Loons' lead to 7-1.

Great Lakes added a run in the fifth. Carson Taylor led off with a single and Captains reliever Nick Gallagher walked Justin Yurchak. With two outs, Vranesh hit another RBI double down the left field line. Taylor scored to give the Loons an 8-1 lead.

Ward started the bottom of the eighth for Great Lakes with a single for his fourth hit of the evening. After a flyout to right field, Taylor added his fourth hit of the day to move Ward to third base. Justin Yurchak drove home Ward with the third single of the inning and pushed the Great Lakes lead to 9-1.

Gaddis (2-3) took the loss for the Captains. He allowed seven runs in 3.2 innings of work. The right-hander surrendered 10 hits, walked one and struck out six.

Melvin Jimenez (2-0) worked a clean fifth inning to earn the win in relief for the Loons. He struck out the side to hold the lead for Great Lakes.

Xzavion Curry gets the ball in game two for the Captains on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Dow Diamond.
