Captains Can't Hold Late Lead
July 6, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lake County Captains News Release
(Comstock Park, MI) -The Lake County Captains watched as the old saying "walks and errors will beat you" held true on Monday night. The Captains committed two more errors and watched as a lead off walk in the eighth inning led to an eventual game winning two run homerun as the Captains fell to the West Michigan Whitecaps, 3-2.
The Captains would get an opportunity to get on the board in the first inning but were unable to take advantage. The Captains would load the bases with one out, but a double play would end the inning.
In the bottom half of the inning the Whitecaps would get a lead off single from Rashad Brown. He would then steal second and advance to third when the throw from catcher Francisco Mejia would sail into centerfield for a throwing error. Brown would then score when with two outs, Joey Pankake would attempt to steal second. He would get into a rundown which allowed Brown to score before the final out of the inning was made. The run was unearned.
Lake County would get the lead in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs Taylor Murphy would walk to extend the inning. Dorssys Paulino, who earlier in the day was named the Midwest League Player of the Week, would single to move Murphy to third. Paulino would then steal second to put two runners in scoring position. Yonathan Mendoza would deliver with a two out, two run single to score both runners for a 2-1 Captains lead.
The Captains would hold that lead until the bottom of the eighth inning. Ross Kivett started the inning by drawing a four pitch walk. He would then steal second. Michael Gerber would follow by connecting on a two run homerun to righfield that bounced off the top of the wall and over the fence to score the game winning runs.
Murphy would lead off the top of the ninth inning with the tying run. However, the Captains would go 1-2-3 to end the game with the tying run at first base.
Jordan Milbrath got a no decision after going 6.0 innings. He allowed just 1 run, unearned, and scattered 4 hits. Milbrath walked 3 and struck out 8. Julian Merryweather (1-2) took the loss in 2.0 innings of relief. He allowed 2 runs, both earned, on 2 hits. He walked 1 and did not record a strike out.
The Captains and Whitecaps will play their final game in West Michigan this season on Tuesday afternoon. Sean Brady will get the start for the Captains. First pitch is at 12:00pm and can be heard on 970AM WFUN.
