Great Lakes Loons News Release
LANSING, MICHIGAN - The Loons scored nine runs in two innings and pummeled the Lansing Lugnuts 9-5 in a game that featured 27 combined hits at Cooley Law School Stadium on Monday night.
The Loons (43-37; 5-7) move to 2-1 on their four-game tour of Michigan and have scored nine runs in two straight games. The run total equals a season high for the Loons in win. Great Lakes scored 11 runs against Lake County in a loss on May 24. Lansing (48-34; 6-6) has dropped three in a row and leads the season series with Great Lakes 4-3.
The Loons raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Lugnuts' right-handed starter Starlyn Suriel (L, 5-4). Two Lansing errors assisted the Loons' cause in the frame.
After Alex Verdugo reached on a single to start the game, Michael Ahmed grounded a ball to third. Jason Leblebijian threw wild down to second and the ball escaped into right field, which allowed Verdugo to take third and Ahmed to arrive safely on first with a fielder's choice error on the third baseman.
Kyle Garlick helped light the scoreboard for the Loons when he drove Verdugo home with a single. Runners on first and second became runners on second and third when Suriel threw wild to Justin Chigbogu. The lefty first baseman nearly left the yard on a fly ball to right, but settled for a sacrifice fly that scored Ahmed to give the Loons a 2-0 lead.
A single muscled into center by Spencer Navin plated another run and the parade kept rolling when Julian Leon hit a hard liner into center field. D.J. Davis misplayed the ball and it rolled under his glove to the wall in center. Navin scored on the error and although Leon was thrown out at third on the play, the Loons still led 4-0 on three unearned runs.
The Lugnuts crept back and scored a pair in their half of the first and trailed 4-3 at the start of the fifth. Righty starter Trevor Oaks (W, 4-5) never gave up the lead, however, and the offense provided him another large dose of run support in the fifth.
Back-to-back doubles opened the frame and gave the Loons a 5-3 lead. Consecutive singles nearly gave the Loons another run, but the Lugnuts threw out Verdugo at home for the first out of the inning.
Great Lakes still held runners on first and second when Chigbogu launched a ball to the deepest part of the ballpark in center. The yard just held the deep fly ball and two more runs scored on the double to make the score 7-3.
Another RBI single from Navin made the score 8-3. On the back end of the play, Navin moved up to second on an error on first baseman Ryan McBroom, the cutoff man who dropped the throw from center. The error proved costly for the Lugnuts because it placed Navin in scoring position and he would score on Leon's second single of the night.
Lansing trimmed the Loons' lead to 9-5, but drew no closer. Lefty Jose Molina and righty Bubby Rossman finished the job on the hill for Oaks.
The Loons wrap up their four-game road trip Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. EDT from Cooley Law School Stadium. The series shifts to Dow Diamond on Wednesday, July 8.
The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
