West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Midwest League All-Star Mike Gerber launched a go-ahead two-run home run as the West Michigan Whitecaps rallied for a 3-2 win over the Lake County Captains Monday at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Whitecaps struck first in the opening inning as Joey Pankake got tied up in a rundown between first and second base, scoring Rashad Brown to give West Michigan a 1-0 lead. Yonathan Mendoza's two-out, two-run single in the fourth scored Taylor Murphy and Dorssys Paulino to give Lake County a 2-1 lead. Ross Kivett began the eighth with a leadoff walk before stealing second base two pitches later. Kivett attempted to steal third base on the next pitch, but Gerber deposited Julian Merryweather's fastball into the Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Deck in right field to give the Whitecaps a 3-2 lead. "It was a hanging changeup," Gerber said. "I was able to get the barrel of the bat on it and put a good swing on it."
WATCH: GERBER'S HOME RUN
Gabe Speier (2-1) turned in one of his strongest outings of the season by pitching three scoreless innings to earn his second win. Julian Merryweather (1-2) took his second loss after allowing Gerber's eighth-inning home run. Joe Jimenez, headed to the MLB Futures Game on July 12, struck out two batters in a scoreless final inning to earn his ninth save. West Michigan improves to 8-4 in the second half, while the Captains fall to 4-8. Gerber led the Whitecaps with two hits and two RBI in the contest.
