West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps were their own worst enemies as part of a 4-0 defeat to the Dayton Dragons in front of a season-high 8,362 fans Thursday night at Day Air Ballpark.
Of the four runs Dayton plated in the contest, either a Whitecaps error, wild pitch, or hit batsman led to the Dragons runs crossing the plate, resulting in the 'Caps first loss of the six-game series.
The action on Thursday paled in comparison to the 24 runs scored on Wednesday - the most scored in a single game this season - but it was the Dragons who scored first by taking advantage of a throwing error in the second inning on a Cade Hunter RBI-single to take a 1-0 lead. In the third, a wild pitch from Colin Fields helped extend Dayton's lead to 2-0. Meanwhile, Dragons starting pitcher Kevin Abel (1-0) dominated, keeping the 'Caps to just two base hits and a walk while striking out seven batters in picking up his first win of the season. At one point, the Dragons starter retired 11 straight West Michigan hitters from the end of the first inning until outfielder Roberto Campos recorded the first base hit of the night with an opposite-field double with one out in the fifth. In the seventh inning, a bloop RBI-triple by Yan Contreras - his first base hit of the season extended the Dayton lead to 3-0. Later in the frame, a wild pitch by reliever Chris Mauloni, who went on to strike out the side in the eighth, sent home the fourth and final Dayton run to conclude the scoring in the contest and send the Dragons to their first win of the week.
The Whitecaps fall to 10-14, while the Dragons improve to 10-14. Colin Fields (0-2) takes his second loss. Campos collected a single and double in a 2-for-3 performance featuring two of the only four hits for the West Michigan offense in a losing cause. First baseman Austin Murr also reached base twice with a single and a walk.
