Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
LANSING, Mich. -- In a game that was delayed by rain for 1 hour and 21 minutes midway through, the TinCaps lost to the Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland A's affiliate), 7-3, on Friday night at Jackson Field.
The Lugnuts (16-24, 47-58) scored six of their runs with two outs. They utilized three home runs, two of which were aided by a gusting wind blowing out to right field before the rain. Second baseman Brennan Milone hit the first, a two-run shot in the first inning. Designated hitter T.J. Schofield-Sam knocked a solo blast in the second that made it 3-0.
TinCaps (22-18, 54-52) center fielder Jakob Marsee (No. 12 Padres prospect) singled in the third inning with two outs, advanced to third base on a double by shortstop Nerwilian Cedeño (No. 27 Padres prospect), and scored on a wild pitch, thanks to tremendous instincts as the ball didn't roll more than a few to the right of the catcher.
However, Lansing added on in its half of the third with two outs again. After a run scored on a wild pitch, right fielder Colby Thomas (No. 19 A's prospect) launched a three-run homer to right carried by the jet stream.
Fort Wayne showed fight in the fifth, as Marsee hit an RBI single to score catcher Anthony Vilar, who had walked and moved to third on a double by left fielder Kai Murphy. Marsee also stole his 41st base of the season. He's first in the league in runs (83) and second in stolen bases. Marsee extended his hitting streak to seven games and his on-base streak to 16 games. Cedeño, who added a single in the first as well, also stretched his hitting streak to six and on-base streak to eight games. Vilar has a hit in seven in a row, plus a walk in four straight.
Rain started pouring in the fourth inning. After the top of the fifth, the game went into a delay.
After the tarp was off, third baseman Jarryd Dale socked a 404-foot home run to left-center field. It was Dale's debut this season. He was the team's primary shortstop a year ago, but suffered a foot injury while playing for his native Australia in the World Baseball Classic in March. That accounted for the only run following the rain.
TinCaps catcher Ethan Salas (No. 1 Padres prospect) was robbed of a hit in the second inning. On a grounder hit hard up the middle, Lugnuts shortstop Jacob Wilson (No. 2 A's prospect) cut the ball off in shallow center field, spun, and threw a missel to first. Salas appeared to be safe, but was called out.
