Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Davenport, IA - Home runs by Noah Miller, Emmanuel Rodriguez and Ben Ross provided the only offense needed for Cedar Rapids Friday night, as the Kernels take game four of the series against Quad Cities 4-3.

After being outscored 11-5 on Thursday night, Quad Cities got on the board first on Friday. To lead off the bottom of the first inning, Jean Ramirez bunted a single on the right side of the infield and moved to second on an error. After a groundout pushed him to third base, a Carter Jensen sac fly scored him to put the River Bandits on top first 1-0.

In the top of the third, the Kernels got on the board and took the lead they would never lose. After a Morales single, Cedar Rapids had a runner on with two out for Noah Miller, who crushed a two-run home run over the wall in right to lift CR ahead 2-1. The next batter, Emmanuel Rodriguez, then crushed a solo shot the opposite way out to left as the Kernels notched back-to-back home runs for the eighth time this season to take a 3-1 lead.

That run support was all Andrew Morris needed to pick up his second win of the season on the mound. The right-hander made it back-to-back wins in back-to-back starts tossing five innings allowing four hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts compared to one walk.

In the top of the sixth inning, Ben Ross added to the Kernels' lead. With one out in the inning, Ross crushed his second home run in as many nights, this one to give Cedar Rapids its largest lead of the game at 4-1.

In the sixth inning, Quad Cities started to chip away at the lead. A Dustin Dickerson RBI double made it a two-run game at 4-2. Then, in the seventh inning, Shervyen Newton belted a solo home run to make it a one-run game at 4-3.

With the Kernels up just a single run after seven innings, John Stankiewicz came on out of the bullpen and locked down the Cedar Rapids victory tossing perfect innings in both the eighth and ninth frames, as Cedar Rapids held on to the 4-3 win.

The victory for the Kernels (65-41) ensures a win in the season series with Quad Cities (45-61) as Cedar Rapids takes back-to-back games in the set. The Kernels try to make it three straight wins over the River Bandits tomorrow night at 6:30, with Cory Lewis on the mound opposite Luinder Avila.
