South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays, ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey and the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, have announced that former Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons has been named Pro Scout by the Capitals.
Fitzsimmons, 36, stepped down as Head Coach in April after spending the previous nine seasons behind the bench; four as an assistant coach and five as Stingrays Head Coach. Fitzsimmons continued with the organization this season, assuming the role of Director of Player Personnel.
"It's an honor just to be working with a National Hockey League team, but especially the Washington Capitals," Fitzsimmons said. "The passion I have for hockey is what drives me, and my goal is to help contribute to winning a Stanley Cup. Fortunately the Capitals have given me the opportunity to try and make that a reality."
Fitzsimmons was preceded by Rick Vaive (1993-1998) and Rick Adduono (1998-2002) as Stingrays Head Coach. The Regina, Saskatchewan native guided the team to a 188-126-37 regular season record and led the Stingrays to the playoffs in four of five seasons behind the bench.
Prior to his coaching career, Fitzsimmons played six years as a professional, including three seasons with the Stingrays. The former goaltender led South Carolina to the Kelly Cup Championship in 1997, when he was named Playoff MVP.
Fitzsimmons will still reside in Charleston with his wife, Chantel and son, Bergen, and continue to run his business, Fitzsimmons Gutters Inc.
The next home game for the Stingrays will be Sunday, November 11 at 4 p.m. versus the Mississippi Sea Wolves. It's the first Sunday of the season with $5 kids tickets purchased at the Coliseum Box Office. Don't forget your skates to stay after the game for Skate with the Rays.
