Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn.. - A 13-game road trip was made a little longer on Wednesday night, but it was worth it for the Sioux Falls Canaries.
The Canaries (35-48) outslugged the St. Paul Saints for a 13-10 victory in 12 innings, erasing a late four-run deficit and surviving a Saints comeback in a four-hour-and-30-minute contest.
Anthony Trajano singled to lead off the 12th inning and scored the go-ahead run on Marcos Rodriguez' double. Reggie Abercrombie then chopped a single over the heads of a drawn-in infield to plate two more runs for a three-run cushion.
Alan DeRatt suffered a blown save when the Saints (41-41) erased a three-run Canaries lead in the bottom of the 10th inning, but Chris Allen (2-0) made sure it did not happen again in the 12th. He pitched a perfect 11th and 12th to notch his second win in relief.
Nick Van Stratten led the Canaries' 21-hit attack with a 4-for-5 performance. He doubled and scored a tying run in the ninth inning, drove in a go-ahead run in the 10th and sacrificed the winning run into scoring position in the 12th.
The Canaries trailed 4-0 after six innings and 7-3 after the seventh. But back-to-back home runs by Jared Clark and Jake Taylor in the eighth inning cut the Saints lead to 7-6, and Rodriguez' single in the ninth inning tied the game against closer Jon Plefka. Rodriguez was 2-for-6 with two RBI.
Dylan Thomas (1-5) suffered the loss in relief for the Saints.
Despite the win, the Canaries were officially eliminated from division contention via Fargo-Moorhead's win on Wednesday night. There are 17 games remaining in the regular season.
The Canaries seek to win the four-game series in the finale at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, August 15. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM and www.kwsn.com.
