
Wingnuts Split Twinbill with 'Cats

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (56-27) split a double header with the Gary SouthShore RailCats (47-35) at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night, winning the opener 2-1 and dropping the nightcap 10-5.
Abel Nieves won game one with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored Brent Clevlen from second base. Clevlen doubled off the bottom of the left field wall with one out in the inning. Two pitches later, Nieves sliced a line drive that just eluded a sliding Drew Martinez for the game-ending hit.
Nick Walters earned the win in relief with a scoreless top of the seventh.
Chris Smith started and took a no-decision. Smith allowed one earned run on seven hits over six innings. Smith walked one and struck out four.
Gary SouthShore took an early 1-0 lead on Christian Vitters' two-out, RBI single to center that scored Mike Massaro. Massaro reached third on a triple down the right field line two batters into the game.
Wichita tied it in the bottom of the third when C.J. Ziegler lined a solo home run to left-center.
Kyle Lindquist took the loss in relief for the RailCats.
Morgan Coombs took a no-decision as Gary SouthShore's starter. Coombs allowed one earned run on six hits in four and two-thirds innings. Coombs walked four and struck out five.
In the nightcap, Gary SouthShore scored in five straight innings to build a 10-3 lead after the Wingnuts had briefly tied the game in the bottom of the second.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the third, Reid Fronk drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run. Brian Kolb then grounded into a double play that made it 5-3.
Adam Klein lined a two-run triple to right in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 7-3.
Massaro drove in the RailCats' eighth run in the top of the fifth after beating out a potential double play groundball.
Drew Martinez and Zac Mitchell added two-out, RBI hits in the top of the sixth for Gary SouthShore.
Nieves cut the lead to 10-4 with an RBI single to right in the bottom of the sixth.
Ryan Khoury hit a solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the seventh for Wichita's final run.
The RailCats scored first for a second time in the double header with three runs against Wingnuts' starter Justin Klipp in the top of the second. Ryan Babineau drew a leadoff walk and scored on a triple to left-center from Fronk. Kolb knocked in Fronk with a line drive single to left and scored three batters later on a two-out, RBI double down the left field line from Ryan Brockett.
The Wingnuts responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and second and one out, Johnny Bowden lined a triple to center field that boucned past a sliding Martinez to drive in two runs. Khoury tied the game with a two-out, RBI double down the left field line.
Klipp took the loss, allowing seven runs, five earned, on five hits in three-plus innings. Klipp walked five and struck out none.
Stephen Hiscock earned the win for Gary SouthShore, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in six innings. Hiscock walked none and struck out three.
With hits in both ends of the double header, Nieves has hit safely in eight games in a row.
