Canaries Take Series, 5-3

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (23-10) took the lead on Tim Marks first home run of the season and never looked back on their way to a 5-3 win over the St. Joe Blacksnakes (8-25) on Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Blacksnakes got on the board right out of the gate, scoring two runs in the first inning. Casey Gordon and Andy Wilson led off with back to back singles. With two on, David Fowler hit a double down the left field line to drive in Gordon and Wilson, giving the Snakes an early 2-0 lead.

The Canaries tied the game in the third inning. Will Smith drew a walk and went around to third on a single by Abner Arroyo. Wil Quintana followed with a ground ball to Blacksnakes third baseman Chad Sosebee. Sosebee threw the ball away at second base allowing Arroyo to advance to third. Will Smith scored from third on the fielder's choice. Ben Van Iderstine brought home Arroyo with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 2-2.

The Blacksnakes regained the lead in the fifth inning. Curt Miaso walked then came around to score on a double by Gordon. After five innings, the Blacksnakes led, 3-2.

The Canaries came back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ben Van Iderstine singled. With two away, Van Iderstine stole second base to get into scoring position for Marks, who hit his first homer of the season to put the Canaries ahead, 4-3.

The Birds added another run in the home half of the seventh. James Shanks led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Smith giving the Birds a 5-3 win.

Kevin Cheppenko (2-2) earned his second win of the season, pitching seven innings. He gave up three runs on five hits and struck out five. Brian Buchanan (0-5) endured the loss for the Blacksnakes. Jerrod Fuell retired the side in order for his 11th save of the season.

The Canaries return to the Birdcage on Friday, June 15 against the St. Paul Saints. Friday is "Friday Night Fireworks" presented by Midwest Dairy.
