
Canaries Lose Heartbreaker

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (1-2) rallied late to take a 6-4 lead, but the Fort Worth Cats (2-1) came back for an 8-6 win over the Canaries on Thursday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
The Canaries jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning. Tim Hutting singled and advanced into scoring position on a balk by Jae Jung. Hutting scored on a single by Joe Anthonsen to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Trevor Lawhorn doubled to score Anthonsen and give the Canaries a 2-0 advantage.
Fort Worth came back to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Patterson opened the inning with a double. Patterson scored on a double by Kelley Gulledge, and Gulledge came in on a single by Isa Garcia. With the game tied, 2-2, Charles Carter drew a walk to advance Garcia to second. After a sacrifice bunt, Garcia scored from third on a groundout by Cameron Blair. After four and a half innings, the Cats led 3-2.
The Cats expanded their lead to 4-2 in the sixth, but the Canaries rallied in the seventh. Jared Lemieux walked and advanced to third on a double by Tim Hutting. Joe Anthonsen singled to score Lemieux and cut the Fort Worth lead to one, 4-3. A wild pitch moved Anthonsen to second, and a Cory Harris single scored both Hutting and Anthonsen to give the Canaries a 5-4 lead. Lawhorn doubled home Harris, and the Canaries led 6-4 after seven innings of play.
Fort Worth got one back in the eighth to make it 6-5 going into the ninth inning. Charles Carter opened the inning with a single. Blair singled to right field advancing Carter to third, and Blair go to third on the throw in by J.D. Reininger. With two in scoring position, Michael Bell singled to drive in two runs and give the Cats a 7-6 lead. Bell scored on a John Allen single to cap the scoring and provide the 8-6 win.
Taylor Parker (2-0) got the win for the Cats in pitching a shutout eighth inning. Aaron Cotter (1-1) gave up three runs on four hits in the ninth to suffer the loss. Gary Lee pitched a one-hit, shutout ninth to save his first game of the season for the Cats.
The Canaries now hit the road for Lincoln where they will open a three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday, July 17 for a series with the Sioux City Explorers. The series opener will be DAV Night featuring a Team Card Set Giveaway and Friday Night Fireworks presented by Sanford Health.
