Pels In First Place and On Winning Streak

The Pensacola Pelicans are on a six-game winning streak and have improved their record to 26-24 to stand atop the American Association South Division. After giving up four runs to the Diablos in the top of the thirteenth inning, the Pelicans scored five of their own in the bottom half to win the first game of the second half. They followed up by blanking El Paso 5-0 in the second game. The latest wins just add to the feats of a Pelicans team that ended the first half by sweeping the division-winning Fort Worth Cats in Texas. Both pitching and hitting came together nicely in the last series, and the Pelicans continue to carry their momentum into the second half.

The Pelicans' bats were alive and well in Fort Worth, as Chase Burch hit his team-best seventh home run of the season, and Lester Contreras recorded his first of the year. Francisco Leandro is hitting .412 in his last five games, and Antoin Gray recorded his team-best 42 and 43 runs batted in on Sunday to rank third in the league.

From the mound, Hunter Davis recorded his tenth and eleventh saves of the season while striking out his 30 batter. On Sunday, Randy Beam picked up his fourth win while pitching six innings of shutout, 2-hit ball. Ulysses Roque improved his record to 4-2 after throwing three solid innings of relief in a 13-inning 11-7 Pelicans victory, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Aaron Jackson also did not permit a run, striking out two batters in his two innings of relief.
