Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (5-3) handed the St. Paul Saints (7-1) their first loss of the 2008 season in a 12-8 victory on Friday night. The Birds pulled away with an eight run fourth inning that saw both Patrick Reilly and Josh Patton homer.

The Saints opened the scoring in the third inning. Four straight singles by Scooter Jordan, Brian Sprout, Tim Brown, and Marcel Longmire plated three runs and the Saints had an early 3-0 advantage.

The Canaries came right back in the bottom of the third. Beau Torbert reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a single by Andrew Barbaro. Torbert scored when Kennard Bibbs grounded into a double play, and the Canaries were on the board. Tim Hutting and Will Smith followed with back-to-back doubles, with Hutting scoring on Smith's two-bagger, and after three innings the Canaries trailed, 3-2.

In the fourth inning, the Birds exploded for eight runs. Patton and Ben Van Iderstine singled to put two on for Reilly. Reilly hit his second home run of the year, and the Canaries took a 5-3 lead. The offense continued with a walk by Torbert and a single by Barbaro. After Bibbs grounded out to move the runners to second and third, Hutting hit into a fielder's choice that saw Torbert score as Barbaro was retired. With two outs in the inning, the Canaries led 6-3, but they weren't done scoring there. Smith walked, advancing Hutting to second and Grant Richardson doubled to bring home both Hutting and Smith for an 8-3 lead. Patton followed with his second homer of the year and the Canaries led by seven, 10-3.

The Saints chipped away at the Canaries lead, but eventually ran out of time falling to the Birds 12-8. Hutting, Patton, Van Iderstine, Reilly, and Torbert each had two-hit nights with Hutting, Patton, Van Iderstine, and Reilly each driving in multiple runs. In his Canaries debut, Andrew Barbaro went 3-for-4.

Ben Moore (2-0) picked up his second win for the Canaries in as many starts. Alec Sheppard (0-1) failed to reach the fifth inning for the second time in a row.

The Canaries and Saints continue the series on Saturday night, when the Birds hold a Think Pink Cap Giveaway presented by Medical X-Ray. The Canaries will giveaway pink Canaries hats to the first 500 fans of all ages, and the Canaries will wear the pink hats during the game, auctioning them off afterward to raise money for the Think Pink foundation.
