Canaries Fall to Explorers, 9-2

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries (19-7) dropped a 9-2 decision against the Sioux City Explorers (8-18) on Wednesday night at Lewis and Clark Park.

The Explorers got out to a big lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jason Tuttle led off with a single and advanced to second on a bunt single by Nick McCoola. Dustin Jones came to the plate next and popped out on an infield fly rule, but the runners advanced to second and third when Abner Arroyo failed to catch the pop up. Jorge Moreno followed with a single to score Tuttle for a 1-0 lead. After Jake Daubert walked to load the bases, Julian Benavidez doubled home McCoola and Moreno to extend Sioux City's lead to three. Daubert scored on a single by Alex Llanos and Mike Richardson brought home Benavidez with a sacrifice fly. After one inning, the Canaries trailed, 5-0.

The Birds got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning to make it a 5-1 game. Angelo Fermin led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by James Shanks.

The Canaries got another run in the sixth inning. With two outs, Ben Van Iderstine bounced a ball to the left side that was misplayed by Explorers shortstop Nick McCoola. The error allowed Van Iderstine to reach and opened the door for Matt Imwalle to double him home. The RBI double by Imwalle pulled the Canaries within three, 5-2.

Sioux City extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Benavidez singled and Llanos doubled to put two into scoring position. Pete Pirman hit a sacrifice fly to score Benavidez, and Tuttle singled to score Llanos for a 7-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Explorers added two more. Jorge Moreno doubled and scored on a double by Jake Dabuert. Daubert took third on an error by Angelo Fermin and scored on a wild pitch. The pair of runs in the seventh gave the Explorers a 9-2 win over the Canaries.

Trey Keopple (1-1) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Aaron Wilson (1-1) held the Canaries to two runs, one earned, on seven hits in 6.2 innings to get his first win of the season.

The Canaries and Explorers will wrap-up the series on Thursday night. Jeff Landing (4-1) will take the mound for the Birds against Alexander Francisco (3-1) for Sioux City. The Canaries return to Sioux Falls on Monday, June 11, when Birdzerk will perform at the Birdcage. Birdzerk is presented by Canaries 2007 Season Sponsor First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard.
