El Paso Diablos News Release
Bryan Cooksey had a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eleventh inning as the Shreveport Sports defeated the El Paso Diablos 6-5 from Fair Grounds Field on Wednesday night.
The Shreveport Sports took an early 2-0 lead against the Diablos. Deacon Burns led off the bottom of the first with a single. Former Diablo J.P Schmidt moved Burns over to third base with a double off the right-center field wall. J.P Schmidt would advance to third base on a ground out and eventually scored on an Andy Torres wild pitch for the two-run advantage.
The Sports added an extra run in the bottom of the second. Juan Ventura had an RBI single plating Deacon Burns for the 3-0 lead.
The Diablos got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Jorge Alvarez blasted a two-run homer to deep left field scoring Kory Drew which cut the deficit to 3-2.
El Paso kept up with the home-run theme in the very next inning. Jordan Belcher bombed a two-run homer to left-center field for the first home run of his Diablos career. The Diablos took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Andy Torres cruised from the third through fifth innings. Torres set down eight of the nine Sports he faced in that span.
Shreveport finally got to Torres in the bottom of the sixth. J.P Schmidt led off the frame with a double off the left field wall. Schmidt advanced to third base on a ground out. Justin Humprhies was then intentionally walked to put runners on the corners. Tommy Bryant came through in the big spot with a two-RBI double to put Shreveport ahead 5-4.
The El Paso Diablos tied things up in the top of the ninth. Logan Wood led off the frame with a solo homer to left field off of closer Aaron Cunningham knotting up the game at five. Cunningham got three quick outs to avoid any more trouble and send the game into the bottom of the ninth.
Dustin Cameron threw a perfect ninth inning to send the Diablos into their fourth extra inning game of the season.
The Diablos had a great chance in the tenth inning to take the lead. Jorge Alvarez and Juan Camacho had back-to-back one out singles putting runners on first and second. However, Aaron Cunnigham struck out Walter Olmstead and induced Matt Kent into a ground out to keep the Diablos off the board.
The Shreveport Sports would come through in the bottom of the eleventh against Ned Darley. Tommy Bryant led off the frame with a seeing-eye grounder through the left side. Melvin Falu got Bryant to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Darley walked Dusty Maddox putting two runners aboard with only one out. Bryan Cooksey provided the heroics as he ripped a single into shallow left field which scored Bryant for the victory.
Andy Torres tossed seven innings allowing five runs off of 10 hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Bert Snow threw seven full allowing four runs off of four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Aaron Cunnigham (1-0) gets the victory as he tossed the final three innings yielding just one run off of five hits with one strikeout.
Ned Darley gets tagged with the loss (3-1) as he allowed one run over one-third of an inning pitched off of two hits with one run and one walk.
The El Paso Diablos will close out their four game set against the Shreveport Sports on Thursday night at 6:05 PM MST. The Sports are just 1.5 games behind the Diablos in the Southern division standings. Greg Wiltshire will be opposed by Colby Miller. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 1380 as well as at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
