St. Paul Saints News Release
LINCOLN, NE (June 6, 2007) - The St. Paul Saints can't stop the runaway train that is the Lincoln Saltdogs, losing 3-1 on Wednesday night at Haymarket Park as the Saltdogs won for the 14th consecutive time.
Once again Wednesday night saw great pitching, timely hitting and the Saints leaving the tying runs on base to end the game.
The Saints, trailing 3-0 in the ninth, put together another good ninth inning against Saltdogs closer Matt Varner, but it turned out to be too late. Adam Olow led off with a lined single off of third baseman Cody Lusero's glove. Marcel Longmire grounded into a fielder's choice forcing Olow at second. Brian Sprout and Brent Krause followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Josue Lopez' groundout scored Longmire and moved the tying runs into scoring position, but Ryan Gripp struck out against Varner to end the game giving him his seventh save of the season.
Saints starter Jake Postlewait was solid, but made just a couple of mistakes and that's all it took. In the second inning Seth Pietsch hit a solo homer over the left field wall, his second of the season, to make it 1-0 Saltdogs.
In the sixth Postlewait loaded the bases with a single and two walks, one intentional. He followed his intentional walk with a walk to Lusero forcing home a run, making it 2-0.
Postlewait gave up a solo homer to Corey Harrington in the seventh to finish off the Saltdogs scoring. Postlewait went 6.1 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking five and striking out two.
Saltdogs starter Chris Jakubauskus was nearly unhittable going 7.0 shutout innings allowing three hits while walking one and striking out five to pick up his sixth victory of the season.
The same two teams meet in the final game of the three game series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Luis Villarreal (1-0, 0.82) to the hill against Saltdogs RHP Jeff Blitstein (2-0, 1.50).
