Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries overcame a four-run deficit to defeat the Sioux City Explorers, 8-6 on Thursday night at Lewis & Clark Park in Sioux City. Canaries centerfield James Shanks was 3-for-5 with five RBI including three on an eighth-inning home run to put the Canaries ahead to stay.
The Explorers (2-6) scored right away in the bottom of the first inning. Jason Tuttle singled and Alex Llanos walked to put runners on first and second. Jake Daubert doubled with two away to score both Tuttle and Llanos, and give the Explorers an early 2-0 lead.
The Canaries (7-1) got one back in the second inning. Ben Van Iderstine reached on an infield single and advanced to second base when Matt Imwalle walked. Van Iderstine came around to score when a groundball by Tim Marks was thrown away by shortstop Nick McCoola, as McCoola tried to turn a double play. Van Iderstine's run got the Canaries on the scoreboard and cut into the Explorers lead, 2-1.
Sioux City got the run back in the bottom of the second inning. Pete Pirman doubled and advanced to third on an infield single by Mike Richardson. Pirman scored on a groundout by McCoola and after two innings the Explorers led 3-1.
The Explorers extended their lead in the third inning. Daubert walked and Julian Benavidez doubled to put runners on second and third for Pirman. Pirman singled to score both Daubert and Benavidez and give the Explorers a 5-1 advantage.
The Birds roared back in the top of the fourth inning. Wil Quintana and Van Iderstine singled and Tim Marks walked to load the bases. With a Canary perched on every bag, Damon Lessler hit a groundball to Explorers shortstop Nick McCoola. McCoola misplayed the grounder for his second error of the night, and everyone was safe, including Quintana at the plate. After Quintana's run made it 5-2 the Canaries added two more runs on a double by James Shanks. Shanks double extended his hitting streak to eight games and plated both Van Iderstine and Marks to bring the Canaries within a run, 5-4.
The Canaries took the lead in the eighth inning. Imwalle reached on a single and Angelo Fermin got on base after being hit by a pitch. With two on, Shanks came through for the Canaries again. He hit his second homer of the season, a three-run shot, and the Birds took a 7-5 lead.
Shanks wasn't done with his big night for the Canaries. In the bottom of the eighth inning the Explorers had runners on first and second when Jason Tuttle singled to centerfield. Mike Richardson tried to score from second, but Shanks threw him out at the plate to end the inning and maintain the Canaries lead.
The Birds added an insurance run in the ninth inning. Abner Arroyo walked and advanced to third base on a single by Van Iderstine. Arroyo came in to score on a throwing error by Explorers shortstop Nick McCoola. McCoola's third error of the game allowed the Canaries to take an 8-5 lead.
The Explorers got a run back in the ninth inning when Alex Llanos reached on a fielding error by Angelo Fermin and came around to score on a single by Benavidez. That would be all the Explorers got as Jerrod Fuell shut the door and picked up his fifth save of the year.
Aaron Garrison (1-0) picked up the win by pitching 2.2 shutout innings in relief, Rory James (0-1) suffered the loss for Sioux City.
The Canaries and Explorers will continue their four-game series on Friday night. Micah Posey will get the start for Sioux Falls against Ty Marotz for Sioux City.
The Birds return home on Tuesday, May 22 to host the Fort Worth Cats in a three-game set, that begins with "AAA South Dakota Member Appreciation" featuring the #6 Dave Ragan Ford Fusion Showcar.
