Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, S.D. â The Sioux Falls Canaries scored early and often en route to a 14-5 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes Wednesday night at the Birdcage.
The Canaries offense scored nine runs in the first inning, seven of those after a two-out error by Winnipeg third baseman Ralph Santana. In all, the Canaries recorded 13 plate appearances in the inning. Goldeyes rookie starter Alex Perez lasted two-thirds of an inning, allowing all nine runs in the inning (two earned) off of six hits.
Sioux Falls continued the offensive barrage in the second inning with a three-run frame off of reliever Phil Akens. Eight batters came to the plate in the inning as the Canaries opened up a 12-0 lead. Through the first two innings, the top three in the Bird order was a combined seven for nine with eight RBI.
Canary starter Tony Cogan allowed the Fish offense a five-run third inning, including two-run homeruns from both Ralph Santana and Jorge Moreno to cut the lead to 12-5. Cogan pitched well the rest of his outing, only allowing two hits outside of the five-hit third inning in his six-inning appearance.
Edgard Clemente blasted a fifth inning two-run homerun in the fifth inning, his fifth of the season, to finish the scoring at 14-5.
Tony Cogan improves to 2-1 while Alex Perez falls to 1-2 in the loss after two-thirds of an inning. Five Winnipeg relievers saw action in the series finale. The Canaries improve to 7-11 and with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks' extra-inning loss to Edmonton, Sioux Falls is now only six games out of first place.
Fargo and Sioux Falls meet in the first game of a four-game weekend series tomorrow night at 7:05 at the Birdcage. Mike Lyons (1-1, 6.46 ERA) is the probable starter for the Canaries while Joe Sergent (3-0, 3.32) will likely get the nod for the RedHawks. Tomorrow night is Pennant Giveaway night at the Birdcage as the first 500 kids 12 and under will receive a Canaries pennant, presented by the Old Courthouse Museum. It is also Thirsty Thursday at the Birdcage, with $1.50 domestic tap beer throughout the game.
Tickets are still available for the final four games of the ten-game homestand by calling 605.333.0179 or visiting www.canariesbaseball.com.
