Schaumburg Flyers News Release

LINCOLN, NE- The Schaumburg Flyers are now mired in their longest losing streak since August 2002 as the Lincoln Saltdogs handed Schaumburg their seventh consecutive loss on Wednesday, June 8, defeating the Flyers 8-5 at Haymarket Park. Schaumburg fell to 4-15 as they are just 1-8 with one more game remaining on their current 10-game road trip. Lincoln ran off their sixth straight win and raised their record to 13-6.

The game was cruising along quietly in Lincoln's favor until the bottom of the seventh. The Saltdogs took a 4-0 lead into that inning and scored again when Jeb Wiseman hit an RBI double off Flyers starter Rick DeHart (0-2). DeHart then brushed back the league's leading hitter, Corey Harris, on his first pitch and hit Harris with his second offering, triggering a bench clearing incident that did not result in any ejections or punches. As the situation calmed, the Lincoln bench threatened DeHart again and the dugouts re-emptied. When order was restored, DeHart was allowed to continue and allowed a two-run double to Mike Goss. Harris scored easily on the play and veered out of the baseline to throw himself at Flyers catcher Rafael Pujols in apparent retaliation for being hit. Pujols was on the first base side of the plate and was not struck by the flying baserunner. The Flyers dugout exploded in anger as a few people came onto the field and the game was delayed, again with no ejections. DeHart was then removed with Lincoln ahead 7-0. An RBI grounder by Bryan Warner off reliever Blake Cross completed a four-run inning.

Lincoln starter Alex Carbajal (2-1) took an 8-0 shutout into the eighth inning but the Flyers did not quit, batting around and scoring five runs to pull to within three at 8-5. Eric Cole (3-for-5, 3 RBI) hit a three-run homer to knock Carbajal out of the game and Schaumburg loaded the bases with nobody out later in the inning against reliever Fernando De Aza. Pujols represented the tying run at the plate but grounded into a double play as the fifth run of the inning scored. De Aza then retired Erik Turberville to end the inning.

The Flyers got a one-out triple from Geoff McCallum in the ninth but closer Jared Hoerman (Save #3) got his second save in as many nights, retiring Jason Fitzgerald and Cole to end the game.

DeHart allowed eight runs, seven earned, over six plus innings despite not walking a batter. Cross and Lyle Prempas finished up with one inning apiece. Harris homered for Lincoln and Goss added three hits. Cole had three hits and Josue Lopez collected two more for Schaumburg but the Flyers stranded seven runners for the second consecutive night.

Earlier Wednesday, the Flyers named Nigel Thatch, a.k.a. 'Leon' from the Budweiser commercials, as their starting pitcher for Friday's homestand opener vs. Joliet. RHP Raymond Jenkins (0-1) will pitch on Thursday night in Lincoln against Saltdogs RHP Adam Lesko (1-0). Catch Thursday's webcast at 7:05 PM at flyersbaseball.com.
