Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - With the go-ahead run aboard in the ninth, the Great Lakes Camels (5-9) fell to the Lake County Captains (10-4) at Dow Diamond Wednesday night, 3-2. Shortstop Leonel Valera finished 3-for-4, falling a double shy of the cycle. Valera's batting average jumps from a .204 to .245 after knocking his second triple and second homerun.
In a game that saw five combined extra-base hits, pitching dominated Wednesday's game. 2020 first-rounder Bobby Miller made his second professional debut for Great Lakes, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. In his two starts this year, Miller hasn't allowed a run in five innings, striking out five. Clayton Beeter kept Lake County scoreless in his lone inning, striking out two. Camels' pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts, surrendering all three runs on Lake County homers.
Lake County's left-handed starter Logan Allen gave up two runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking none. Fellow lefty Tim Herrin (W, 1-0) relieved Allen for the final out of the sixth, then powered the game through the eighth, allowing no runs on two hits, no walks and four strikeouts. Nic Gallagher (S, 2) tossed eight straight balls to start the ninth, and would bounce back with back-to-back strikeouts. As a whole, Lake County pitchers struck out 13, walking two.
GL left-hander Braidyn Fink (L, 0-3) inherited a runner at first to begin his night in the eighth with no outs, needing just four pitches to retire the side. On a 3-2 count with two outs in the ninth, Fink surrendered the go-ahead run on a solo shot to Brayan Rocchio, his second homer of the season.
Daniel Schneeman made his series debut for the Captains, tying the game in the top of the seventh with a two-run homerun, his first of the season. Lake County (0-for-6) and Great Lakes (0-7) both struggled with runners in scoring position.
The Lake County win makes the Captains the first team to reach the 10-win mark in the High-A Central, guaranteeing at least a tie in the East for first. Great Lakes remains at the bottom of the division, giving up the first two games of the series versus the Captains.
Miguel Vargas inches closer to the .300 batting average line with a 2-for-4 night, upping the average to .291. Batting atop the Camel's lineup Wednesday night, Vargas has recorded a multi-hit game in back-to-back nights, his third in his last five games. In that same stretch, Vargas is averaging .391 at the plate with a double and a homerun.
Right-hander Jose Martinez is expected to make his second start of the season for Thirsty Thursday at Dow Diamond, with half-off beers and canned seltzers presented by Miller Lite. Martinez lasted 5 1/3 innings in his first start in West Michigan on May 14, allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts. In 9 1/3 innings total, Martinez hasn't allowed an earned run in his two games. Gates open an hour before the first pitch scheduled time of 6:05 p.m., live radio coverage begins at 5:35 p.m. on ESPN 100.9 FM.
