Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Moose Jaw, SK - Atley Calvert has done something only done once before in Moose Jaw Warriors' history.
Calvert scored twice in the Warriors' 8-4 win over Lethbridge on Tuesday, giving him a team-leading 33 goals on the season, which ties a franchise-record for most goals by a Moose Jaw-born player.
"Any time you can be compared to guys that come here before and played before and have been successful, it's obviously cool," Calvert said.
David Bararuk set the Warriors record when the Moose Jaw product posted 33 goals in 72 games during the 2001-02 season. Calvert has hit the mark in just 56 games this season.
Calvert credits the team's successful for his record-tying season.
"At the end of the day, it's the product of our team, we've got a really good group here," he said.
The first goal for Calvert came with what has become a patent move for the forward, using his power in front of the net.
He said he's become comfortable going to the front of the net to score goals.
"It's not the prettiest job, but I try and do the best job I can and work on a lot of little things, stick positioning or footwork around the net and it's really helped me grow as a player this year," Calvert said.
Calvert entered this season with 18 career goals after scoring a career-high 15 goals during the 2021-22 season. He's more than doubled that output so far this season.
Warriors assistant coach Scott King said Calvert has worked hard to improve his game.
"He deserves everything he gets," he said.
"He's a great kid, tremendous person, works on his game, no shortcuts at all in anything he does."
Calvert was passed over in the WHL Draft and eventually listed by the Warriors. He was also overlooked in the NHL Draft, but earned an opportunity to attend the Buffalo Sabres rookie camp before this season.
King said Calvert has a future in the game.
"He's one of those guys that has always been overlooked a little bit and you can see he's getting rewarded this year with playing some real good hockey," he said.
"It could be another Tanner Jeannot story with him."
Calvert has 12 games remaining this season to add to his goal total.
The Warriors return to the ice this weekend when they battle the Swift Current Broncos in a home-and-home set, starting on Friday night at the Hangar in downtown Moose Jaw.
