Cabbage, Gore Highlight 4-2 Comeback Win

DAVENPORT, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied from a 2-0 deficit Sunday at Modern Woodmen Park to grab a 4-2 road win against the Quad Cities River Bandits. Trey Cabbage pulled the Kernels even with a solo home run, and Jordan Gore drove in two runs including the go-ahead tally in the seventh inning. Gore went 1-of-4 including a walk and has reached safely in all 11 appearances this year.

Cedar Rapids (10-8) split this four-game series with Sunday's win. Quad Cities (10-12) yielded a season-high 12 walks in the contest and allowed all nine Kernels to get on base at least once. The game was Cedar Rapids' longest nine-inning tilt of the season at three hours and 27 minutes.

Quad Cities opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. Jonathan Arauz walked and later came home after back-to-back errors. Colton Shaver added an RBI single that pushed the River Bandits' early advantage to 2-0.

The Kernels closed the gap to 2-1 during the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases to start the frame. Two batters later, Gore grounded out and brought in Andrew Bechtold.

Cabbage's first round-tripper of the year tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the sixth inning. He lifted an opposite-field solo shot to left field to continue the comeback.

Five walks within the seventh pushed Cedar Rapids in front by a 4-2 margin. With the bases loaded and two outs, Gore walked against Colin McKee (3-1) to force in Ben Rodriguez. Jean Carlos Arias drew a walk of his own off Adam Bleday that allowed Ben Rortved to score. McKee gave up four walks and two runs in two-thirds of an inning in a losing decision.

Shutout pitching from relievers Derek Molina (1-0) and Moises Gomez helped the Kernels secure the victory. Molina stranded an inherited runner and tossed a season-high three scoreless innings in his first Midwest League win. Gomez added two scoreless frames and garnered his first professional save.

Cedar Rapids will be idle Monday before kicking off a six-game homestand Tuesday. The Kernels will host the South Bend Cubs Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. with Cedar Rapids right-hander Edwar Colina (1-0, 1.00) and South Bend right-hander Cory Abbott (1-0, 2.12) expected to start the contest.
