Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars walked off to win the finale of a seven-game homestand, 7-6, against the Burlington Bees on Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field.
The Cougars took an early lead on Ernie De La Trinidad's RBI single in the bottom of the first. Burlington responded in the fourth inning. Torii Hunter started the inning with a single. The next batter, Brandon Marsh, doubled to advance Hunter to third. After a strikeout, Keinner Pina tied the game with an RBI ground out to third base. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jasrado Chisholm delivered a two-out single to put the Cougars back in front, 2-1.
The Bees answered back in the sixth. Torii Hunter and Brandon Marsh started the inning with consecutive singles. Spencer Griffin tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single. Pina gave the Bees a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly.
In the Cougars' seventh inning, Luis Basabe led off with a walk. Chisholm followed with a single to put runners at first and second. The next hitter, Will Gorman, doubled home Basabe to tie the game at three. Renae Martinez lofted a sacrifice fly to left-center to give the Cougars the advantage, 4-3.
The Bees batted around in the top of the eighth inning. The Cougars elected to intentionally walk Julio Garcia with two outs and runners at second and third. David Mackinnon earned a bases-loaded walk to force in the game-tying run. The next hitter, Jeyson Sanchez, roped a two-RBI single to left field to give the Bees a 6-4 lead.
In the ninth, the Cougars coaxed back-to-back walks by Will Gorman and Renae Martinez to start the frame. With one out, Ernie De La Trinidad tripled to right field to drive in two runs and tie the game. Yoel Yanqui followed with an RBI single up the middle to walk it off for the Cougars.
Jeff Bain took no decision on the mound for the Cougars. He went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Breckin Williams tossed two no-hit innings, striking out four batters. Carlos Bustamante suffered his first blown save of the year, yielding three runs on two hits and four walks over 0.2 innings. Jayson McKinley (1-1) earned the win, recording the final four outs without allowing a run.
Isaac Mattson lasted just two innings in his start for the Bees. He allowed one run on three hits in a no decision. Jorge Taverez surrendered one run in three innings. Brett Hanewich allowed the Cougars to regain the lead in the seventh inning, allowing two to score. James Ziemba was charged with the first two runs of the ninth. Jon Malmin (0-1) was responsible for the game-winning run, taking the loss.
The Cougars hit the road for a six-game homestand against eastern division foes, beginning with Tuesday's tilt with Lansing. The Cougars will send left-hander Mack Lemieux (1-2, 4.74) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Buy tickets by calling 630-232-8811 or on kccougars.com.
