BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (12-11) take the weekend series with the Lake County Captains (11-11) winning the rubber match, 7-1. RHP Alex Valverde turned in another solid start throwing five innings, only allowing one run and three hits. He walked three and struck out three as well.
The Captains scored their only run of the game in the first inning with back to back doubles from SS Ernie Clement and 3B Nolan Jones. The Hot Rods got out of the inning thanks to back to back lineouts.
The Hot Rods didn't wait long to respond when they took the lead in the third inning with the help of an outfield error. C Zac Law lead off with a single and stole second. He scored on the error which put 2B Zach Rutherford on third. Rutherford came around on a LF Moises Gomez single. 3B Jim Haley picked up his first RBI of the season with a sac fly as well.
The Hot Rods picked up two more runs in the third with a Gomez sac fly that scored DH Brendan McKay. 1B Devin Davis hit an RBI double to follow up and the Hot Rods lead the Captains 5-1.
RHP Jose Disla came out of the pen in relief of Valverde and pitch great, allowing just one walk in six innings and striking out five of the seven batters faced.
The Hot Rods got their final two runs of the game in the sixth inning when a throwing error from the catcher on a pickoff attempt brought home SS Taylor Walls and CF Carl Chester.
RHP Tyler Zombro and RHP Riley O'Brien finished off the Captains; they each threw a shutout inning with O'Brien recording the last out of the game. The win moves the Hot Rods ahead of the Captains in the Midwest League standings, as Bowling Green now sits in third in the Eastern Division.
The Hot Rods will enjoy an off day tomorrow before heading to Clinton, Iowa to face the LumberKings on Tuesday.
