Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Great Lakes Loons had longed for their first series win of the season and it came on Sunday afternoon against the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field. The Loons took two-of-three off the Cubs by winning the finale 9-4.
Great Lakes (7-14) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead through two innings thanks to Cubs (9-11) #3 prospect Jose Albertos' inability to find the strike zone. Albertos (L, 0-3) walked six Loons in 1 2/3 innings and saw his ERA stay at 27.00.
Command issues were a theme of the game for South Bend pitching as the Loons benefited from a season-high eight walks and five hit batters.
Conversely, Loons pitchers only walked three Cubs as the bullpen lineup of Logan Salow (making his Loons debut), Zach Pop, and Marshall Kasowki combined to give up just one earned run in the final four innings. Loons starter Edwin Uceta (W, 3-0) became the first Loons pitcher this season to win three games after logging five innings ceding three runs.
Brayan Morales led off the game for Great Lakes with a double to left-center field and never looked back. "B-Mo" finished 4-for-5 and fell a homeurn short of the cycle. Morales had two infield singles, a double, and a triple. The 22-year-old also stole three bases and drew a walk.
This marks the first time since their final series of 2017 that the Loons have won a series outright and marks the first time winning a series away from Dow Diamond since they took three-of-four off the Fort Wayne TinCaps in August of last season.
After a league-wide off day on Monday, the Loons return home to play teams from the Western Division for the first time this season. Tuesday begins a six-game homestand for Great Lakes beginning with the Quad Cities River Bandits (Astros) on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT with pregame coverage on ESPN 100.9-FM getting underway at 6:35.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
